Colgan Sharks
Classification: VHSL 6A / Region B 2022 Record:
The Sharks lost a lot of offensive and defensive talent from their 2022 squad. Ryan Kennedy and Carter Newman both moved on to Virginia Tech. 2022 staff ace Connor Knox is getting quality innings early on at George Mason. Brandon Cassedy, the 6A player of the Year for the Sharks, is now at Christopher Newport. However, the Sharks return some talented seniors in a pair of Virginia Tech commits, Brett Renfrow and Matthew Westley, as well as senior catcher and Dayton commit, Jae'dan Carter. Marsden Zajac and Caden Colangelo (Emory) are two additional seniors that should make strong contributions for the Sharks. New faces that could potentially help in 2023 are Julius Bagnerise and Tyler Bassett. Colgan has two big arms, with staff ace Brett Renfrow and Matthew Westley. Renfrow will be the key, as he should get the ball in big games and could have a player of the year type of season.
Key Returners:
Colonial Forge Eagles
Classification: VHSL 6A / Region B 2022 Record:
The Eagles had a very strong 2022 season and lost a bit off of that squad. They do bring back the two centerpieces that anchor their offense and defense in senior outfielders Zach Colangelo (Longwood) and Zyhir Hope (North Carolina). Colangelo and Hope provide dynamic speed in the outfield and on the bases. Colangelo is a great table setter at the top of the order and Hope is one of the most dynamic offensive talents in Virginia. The key to how far Forge goes this spring will be their rotation. Hope can be factor in that mix, and if a few other arms can step up this spring Colonial Forge will be a force to be reckoned with in Region B.
Key Returners:
Freedom-South Riding Eagles
Classification: VHSL 6A / Region B 2022 Record:
The 2022 Class 6 State Champs return a lot of their championship roster. Headlined by a three-headed senior class monster on the mound this spring, look for the Eagles to be back in the thick of it in late May. Luke Proehl (Virginia Tech) was outstanding in the State Title game, lefty Ryan Marohn (NC State) was dominant as a multi-role guy, shutting the door in the State Semifinal, and Mason Butash (Penn State) was the Cedar Run District Player of the Year as a two-way contributor in 2022. All three are back and will form the backbone of a stacked rotation. Butash and junior outfielder Griffin Burkholder (West Virginia) provide juice and athleticism in the middle of a deep lineup, as well as senior shortstop Christian Carver (George Mason) who is the key to the offense. As always, expect Freedom to be well-coached, scrappy, and to execute. Add that to the high-end talent on the roster the Eagles are a potential powerhouse and the very early on-paper favorites in Class 6.
Key Returners:
Patriot Pioneers
Classification: VHSL 6A / Region B 2022 Record:
The Pioneers faltered in some big spots in 2022 and lost the heart of their offense to graduation. Despite that, a trio of arms will give them a chance to be dangerous in a top-heavy Cedar Run District and Region 6B. Seniors Jordan Capuano (UNC Wilmington) and Jakob Foster (Mt. St. Mary's) anchored the pitching staff in 2022 and should again this spring. Look for late bloomer and fellow senior Nathan Bassett (Virginia) to carve out a role in the rotation as well as his pure stuff can take over a game. Sophomore Grady Lenahan (East Carolina) was a revelation as a day one starter his freshman year, look for him to move up the lineup and have more of an impact offensively and athletically this spring and keep an eye on recent Winthrop commit and senior Caleb Ramey who has held down a middle infield spot for two years now and has some barrel feel.
Key Returners:
Battlefield Bobcats
Classification: VHSL 6A / Region B 2022 Record:
The Bobcats graduated ace Carson Estridge (West Virginia) as well as fellow senior arms Kyle Zambrana and Jack Robinson (Roanoke). While those losses will leave a hole in the Battlefield rotation, the Bobcats have a decent amount of their lineup returning this spring and should see an increased role for sophomore lefty Sam Michel (Duke). Michel got a decent amount of work as a freshman and should move into the top spot of the rotation, look for senior Joey Swekosky (Marymount) to also contribute. Offensively, senior catcher JP Williams (George Mason) is back as the centerpiece, while fellow seniors Carson Cho (Coast Guard) and Cooper Harris (Frederick CC) are also back. Cho is great at the top of the order and Harris also provides some thump behind Williams. Senior Grayson Snead should also be poised to make big contributions for the Bobcats this spring. Snead is a versatile defender, as well as can bring some speed on the bases for the Bobcats.
