The spring season is underway and our analysis of the Madison Preseason I.D. continues with the top outfield prospects. Throughout the week we will be breaking down each position with complete scouting reports of players from the event. For our breakdown of outfielders we look at the top outfielders in each graduating class, starting with juniors.

Here’s a look at the top outfield prospects.

Top 2017 Prospects

1. Nick Elsen, OF, Indian Trail, 2017
Kent State commit. 6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder with a lanky, athletic frame. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with an arm bar load. Short stride with explosion in the lower half. Gap to gap hitter with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 88 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.05. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with carry throwing an event best 91 mph from the outfield. Plays thru the ball with athletic actions and quick, fluid footwork.

2. Ryan Wickman, OF, River Valley, 2017
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder with an athletic frame. Ran second best 60 at the event at 6.75. Offensively hits from a balanced, slightly open stance with a short stride. Line drive hitter with a long, uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Quick footwork playing thru the ball. Two handed fielder. Throws showed carry throwing 87 mph from the outfield.

3. Carl Valk, OF/LHP, Appleton North, 2017
5-foot-10, 145-pound switch-hitting OF/LHP with a lanky frame. Offensively, from the left side hits from a balanced, open stance with a short stride back to even. Line drive hitter with fluid rhythm. 82 mph exit velocity form a tee left handed. From the right side has a more linear setup with a smooth load and showed uphill path. Showed strength thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity from a tee right handed. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Plays thru the ball with a long exchange and fluid footwork. Threw 84 mph from the outfield. On the mound works form a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action and high draw out of the glove. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Smooth rhythm with an athletic finish. Fastball sat 78-80 mph. Curveball showed short breaking action with 1-7 shape at 69-71 mph. Changeup sat 70-73 mph.

4. Tanner Smith, OF/LHP, Kettle Moraine, 2017
6-foot, 201-pound left-handed hitting OF/LHP with a strong frame. Offensively hits from a narrow, open stance with a leg lift stride back to even. Uphill path with a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 88 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.00. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with carry, throwing 88 mph from the outfield. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork. On the mound works from a low ¾ arm angle with a loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing and athletic finish. Easy effort with some rhythm. Fastball sat 80-82 topping out at 83 mph. Curveball showed sweeping action at 68-73 mph. Changeup sat 72-76 mph.

5. Tommy Hill, OF, Madison West, 2017
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitting outfielder with a strong frame. Offensively hits from a wide base with a crouched setup. Short stride with good balance. Short, level swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.26. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Quick footwork with a quick, clean exchange. Threw 84 mph from the outfield.

Top 2018 Prospects

1. Ty Olejnik, OF/RHP, Hamilton Sussex, 2018
6-foot-3, 185-pound left-handed hitting OF/RHP with a lanky, athletic frame. Offensively hits from a balanced setup, smooth load to backside. Leg kick stride with good balance. Line drive gap to gap hitter with short swing path and fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with an event best 96 mph exit velocity from a tee. Also ran an event best 6.63 60 yard dash. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork and soft hands. Threw 89 mph from the outfield. One of the top outfielders in the Wisconsin Class of 2018. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short, arm action. Works exclusively out of the stretch. Drop and drive delivery, working in line with home plate. Square landing with regular effort. Fastball sat 78-80 mph. Curveball showed 1-7 shape at 61-65 mph. Maintained arm speed on changeup with sinking action at 68-70 mph.

2. Alan Roden, C/OF, Middleton, 2018
5-foot-11, 175-pound left-handed hitting multi-positional player, offensive minded prospect. Bat should play well, balanced stance, short stride, maintains strong balance. Bat stays in the zone well, made consistent hard contact in BP, shows left handed power in his bat. 84 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played at 81 mph from the outfield, 75 mph out of the crouch, short over the top arm action. Actions showed best in the outfield, worked through the baseball, projects best at a corner outfield spot. Out of the crouch posted pop times at 2.05-2.12, solid receiver. 7.24 runner in the 60.

3. Tony Alesci, OF, Catholic Memorial, 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitting outfielder with a strong frame. Offensively hits from an open stance with a short stride and average balance. Pull power hitter with a short, level swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Online throws with carry throwing 89 mph form the outfield. Plays thru the ball with a long exchange, lots of steps before release.

4. Brady Schipper, OF, Stoughton, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder with an athletic frame. Offensively hits from a balanced, relaxed setup with a short leg kick stride and good balanced. Line drive gap-to-gap hitter with loose hands and fast bat. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.04. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Plays thru the ball with average hands. Threw 78 mph from the outfield.

5. Tyler Gaecke, OF, Mukwonago, 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitting outfielder with a solid frame. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork and a long exchange. Threw 82 mph from the outfield. Offensively hits form an open stance with a long stride and high back elbow. Pre pitch rhythm in hands. Power hitter with a short, level swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.51.

Top 2019 Prospects

1. Max Bruff, C/OF, Indian Trail, 2019
5-foot-9, 165-pound catcher/outfielder, strong compact shape. Defensively showed some quick twitch actions, fast exchange, pop times ranged 2.19-2.36 out of the crouch, solid block and soft receiver. Arm played at 76 mph out of the crouch, short over the top slot, 81 mph from the outfield. Showed athletic abilities at multiple defensive positions, projects best behind the plate. 7.17 runner in the 60. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, good balance. Loose hands, shorter path, line drive gap to gap guy with bat speed and strength, 90 mph exit velocity from the tee.

2. Carter Robinson, RHP/OF, Appleton North, 2019
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a lanky, athletic frame. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with some rhythm. Worked downhill with his fastball that was straight at 76-77 topping out at 79 mph. Showed better feel for his secondary from the stretch. Curveball has 12-6 shape at 64-66 mph. Changeup showed sinking action at 65-66 mph for strikes. Offensively hits from an open stance with a leg kick stride and good balance. Short, uphill swing path, flashed a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.24. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork. Threw 79 mph from the outfield.

3. Drew Leszczynski, OF/SS, Brookfield Central, 2019
6-foot, 168-pound right-handed hitting OF/SS with a strong frame. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. More natural actions in the outfield playing thru the ball. Throws showed carry from the outfield throwing 86 mph. Threw 83 mph across the infield. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a high hand set. Short leg lift stride and average balance. Long, uphill swing path. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.40.

Adrian Bethel, OF/1B, Memorial, 2017
6-foot-1, 209-pound right-handed hitting OF/1B. Offensively hits from an open stance with a wrap load and short stride. Long swing path with stiff rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.64. Defensively in the outfield has a long arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Threw 84 mph from the outfield. At first base threw 74 mph across the diamond.

Beau Blackdeer, C/OF, DeForest, 2019
5-foot-10, 155-pound catcher/outfielder, athletic shape. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, average balance. Showed ability to repeat, average bat speed, line drive type hitter. 83 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed actions, gets out of the crouch and has ability to play downhill in the outfield. Pop times at 2.19-2.25. Arm played at 68 mph out of the crouch, 77 mph from the outfield, short over the top slot, showed accuracy out of the crouch.

Tate Carter, RHP/OF, Brookfield Central, 2018
5-foot-11, 156-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a lanky frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with a square landing and regular effort. Fastball sat 75-76 mph. Curveball showed 11-5 shape at 65-68 mph. Showed feel for his changeup at 71-73 mph. Offensively hits from a wide base with a closed off setup. Short stride with average balance. Line drive hitter with a short, level swing path and fluid rhythm. 76 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.75. Defensively showed off arm strength in the outfield throwing 79 mph.

Javon Connolly, 2B/OF, St. Joseph Catholic, 2018
6-foot-2, 175-pound left-handed hitting utility player. Offensively hits from a narrow, open stance with a leg kick stride. Short, uphill swing path. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.98. Defensively took drills in the infield and outfield. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Two handed fielder. Threw 75 mph across the infield and 77 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a high ¾ to over the top arm angle with a long draw out of the glove. Tall and fall, online delivery. Fastball sat 74-75 topping out at 76 mph. Curveball was soft with 12-6 shape at 55-59 mph. Slowed arm on changeup at 56-59 mph.

Alex Cyskiewicz, C/OF, Catholic Memorial, 2019
6-foot, 190-pound catcher/outfielder, strong solid build, sturdy. Right-handed hitter, slight open setup, leg kick trigger with slight bat wrap, pre-pitch waggle load. Shows bat strength, fast bat on level path, occasional hard contact. 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played over the top, 76 mph from the outfield, 68 mph out of the crouch. Showed an ability to play through the baseball with aggressive actions in the outfield. Pop times ranged 2.25-2.40, good direction out of the crouch, gets tall at times. Ran the 60 at 7.85.

Chris DeKrey, RHP/OF, Jefferson, 2017
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a strong frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with an athletic finish. Showed explosion in the core. Fastball was firm at 82-83 mph. Slowed arm on changeup at 61-65 mph. Cutter sat 77-80 mph. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short leg lift stride. Short, uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.06. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fluid footwork with average hands. Threw 83 mph from the outfield.

Luke DePrey, LHP/OF, Sun Prairie, 2018

Cedric Girard, RHP/OF, Oregon, 2018
6-foot-2, 158-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a thin, lanky frame. On the mound works between a ¾ and high ¾ arm angle with a long, quick arm action. Drop and drive delivery with a closed landing and athletic finish. Easy effort with smooth rhythm. Fastball sat 82-84 mph for strikes. Curveball shape was between 12-6 and 1-7 at 69-71 mph. Zak Kosloske, C/OF, Hortonville, 2017
5-foot-10, 178-pound catcher, carries some lean strength. Right-handed hitter, wide setup, short stride, good balance. Showed bat speed and made hard contact, 94 mph exit velocity from the tee. Level bat path, hands work well, can get more lower half involved. Defensively posted pop times at 2.08-2.16, solid receiver, showed actions in the outfield as well. Showed above average arm strength, 79 mph out of the crouch, 85 mph from the outfield. Ran a 7.3 in the 60. Can project defensively at both catcher and a corner outfield spot.

Tressin Kussmaul, OF, Janesville Craig, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, long rigid frame, lean build. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, leg kick trigger, arm bar load. Occasionally hits off front foot, slight uphill path, 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played at 70 mph from the outfield, over the top slot. Plays through the baseball in stride, 7.58 runner in the 60.

Jake Lukach, OF, Whitefish Bay, 2019
5-foot-11, 150-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively hits from a balanced, slightly open setup with smooth load and short leg lift stride. Pull hitter with loose hands a short path. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.11.  Defensively has along arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Plays thru the ball with a quick transfer. Threw 81 mph from the outfield.

Eric Modaff, OF, Oregon, 2017
5-foot-8, 173-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top arm slot. Athletic actions, playing thru the ball, with quick footwork. Quick, clean exchange with online throws. Threw 84 mph from the outfield. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with deep to tap load to backside. Level swing path, hits off front foot. Showed strength thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.10.

Trey Mohr, RHP/SS, Elk Mound, 2017
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitting utility player. Took drills at every position but catcher. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with a square landing and athletic finish. Smooth rhythm with good balance throughout delivery. Fastball sat 78-79 topping out at 81 mph. Curveball showed more slider action with tight breaking and late action at 69-72 mph. Changeup showed downer action at 68-71 mph. Defensively in the infield with a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Threw 73 mph across the diamond, showed good body control on run thru. Showed above average arm strength throwing 86 mph from the outfield when he played thru the ball. Offensively hits from a tall setup with a short level swing path. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.36.

Matthew Osterberg, LHP/OF, Coleman, 2017
6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitting LHP/OF with a lanky, high waisted frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a loose arm action. Wraps on the backside. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing. Fastball sat 80-82 topping out at 83 mph for strikes. Showed feel for his curveball with 12-6 shape, sharp action, and tight rotation at 67-69 mph. Maintained arm speed on his changeup at 72-73 mph. Offensively hits form a balanced setup with a smooth load and short stride. Line drive hitter with fluid rhythm and a short, level swing path. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.59. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Threw 79 mph from the outfield. 

Paul Petit, RHP/SS, Eau Claire Regis, 2017
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting utility player with a lean, lanky frame. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a quick arm action and slight stab on the backside. Tall and fall, online delivery with a square landing. Good mound presence. Fastball sat 82-84 topping out at 85 mph. Curveball showed 12-6 shape with short breaking action at 71-72 mph for strikes. Changeup showed arm side run at 74-77 mph for strikes. Defensively took drills in the infield and outfield. In the infield has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Accurate throws with carry throwing 82 mph across the infield. In the outfield showed off raw arm strength throwing 87 mph. Offensively has hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and short stride. Line drive hitter with a level swing path and fluid rhythm. Showed a fast bat with good balance thru swing. Strength thru contact with 94 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 6.99.

Trajan Prochnow, RHP/OF, Rio, 2018
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a strong frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing, falls to first base side after release. Fastball was mostly straight flashing some cut at 82-83 mph. Curveball showed 11-5 shape at 64-66 mph. Fastball arm speed on changeup with occasional cutting action at 77-80 mph. Offensively hits from a balanced, upright setup with a short stride and average balance. Short, level swing path with a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.28. Defensively has a long, loose arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Plays thru the ball. Threw 87 mph from the outfield.

Caden Rhyner, OF/C, Waunakee, 2019
5-foot-9, 155-pound outfielder/catcher. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, average balance. Loopy path, average bat speed, 73 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played at 63 mph from the outfield, 59 mph out of the crouch, over the top slot. Pop times ranged 2.69-2.85. 7.79 runner in the 60.

Jacob Schellpfeffer, LHP/OF, Mayville, 2018
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting LHP/OF with a strong frame. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with regular effort and smooth rhythm. Fastball showed running action at 83-84 topping out at 85 mph. Curveball has 1-7 shape at 63-66 mph. Also featured a slider at 62 mph. Changeup showed sinking action at 68-72 mph. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top arm slot. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork. Sam Sieloff, OF/RHP, Madison Memorial, 2018
5-foot-9, 150-pound left-handed hitting OF/RHP. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork. Threw 77 mph from the outfield. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short stride. Long, uphill swing path. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.35. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Reid Simon, OF, Lafollette, 2017
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork and a quick exchange. Uphill throws.
