Fontyn is now in his fourth year starting on the varsity level for the Spartans, and with each year has steadily improved his game. This live look was a testament to another year of development for the RH hitter who is now hitting in the leadoff spot. His swing was looking more rhythmic and fluid with less effort to get off his “A swing” and being more adjustable when his timing or pitch selection were slightly off to allow him to not only stay on a low breaking ball for a single in his first plate appearance, but also foul off pitches rather than whiffing or putting them in play weakly. As well, the cleaner swing operation allowed him to get to an elevated FB on his hands and launch it to the pull side for a double. He was on base in each of his first four plate appearances with two hits, a walk, and an HBP. Not only was the swing improved, but he has slid over to play 3B this year, where his feet are very good moving laterally, coming down hill, or having to work back on a tough in-between hop, a testament to the work Rio Mesa INF coach Matt May has done to prepare him for the spot. There is still some polish in terms of the instincts and completing the play at 3B for Fontyn to improve on, but the foundation of what I saw today gives him a shot to make it his long-term home at the next level. Much like his uncommitted senior teammate Barron, Fontyn should be high on the list of JUCO programs hunting for players to make their team better in 2027 and beyond.
