Angel Cervantes, Warren (CA), 2025 University of California-Los Angeles Positional Profile: RHP/3B Cervantes is a mainstage power arm, but his hitting ability and overall athleticism can't be ignored for its impact in HS baseball. Consistent line drives. 72.1 mph bat speed with 8 G's of rotational acceleration. Power: 94 max exit velocity, averaged 84.1 mph. 296' max distance. Arm: RH. INF-82 mph. Short arm action, accurate arm. Defense: Coordinated and confident at 1B.
9/23/23
Prep Baseball All-American Game: An athletic mover with whippy arm speed, Cervantes uses a quick arm action in a high, three-quarters arm slot. Sturdy lead leg block with advanced ability to repeat. Fastball will jump out of the hand at 91-93 with some carry and arm-side run. Ability to land to both sides of the plate. Sweeper at 79-81 shows present command to land for strikes early in counts and whiffs late. Changeup is as advanced as you’ll find in the class. At 77-79 with excellent feel and averaging nearly 18 inches of arm-side fade, The UCLA commit has the confidence to throw the pitch in any situation. It’s a real feel for three pitches that continue to get better.
8/10/23
UC AREA CODE GAMES: Few showed the mound presence of Cervantes as the wiry-athletic, 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander had to deal with some traffic in delivering an eye-opening 3-inning, 6-strikeout performance. Working 89-92 with some sizzle to the bottom of the zone to go along with a tight slider in the upper 70s and high spin changeup (77-78), his ability to manage the game and compete stood out even more than the electric stuff. After getting jumped on the first pitch of the day for a double and later an error by an infielder, Cervantes refused to allow a run, and applied pressure in the zone in stranding the bases loaded with back-to-back strikeouts. The fastball/slider combo had shown elite upside prior to this look, but the changeup was a revelation in San Diego. The future potential of three above average pitches should have many departments dreaming of Cervantes as a future starter.
