Area Code Tryout - Cal commit; Two way player (3B/P), had one of the only hard hit balls in the tryout as he tripled over the CFs head, balanced hitter, good barrel control, can use the whole field, strength is present with opportunity for more gains, works inside ball well without sacrificing ability to drive the ball. On mound was impressive with sinker/slider repertoire, FB down and a ground ball getter (87-88), small quick slider with feel for the zone and usability (79-80).

Summer scouting - Uncommitted; Pitched at the CCB World Series event earlier this summer and getting to see him on the mound again allowed me a better look at his repertoire. Long limbed with wider shoulders, Turkington has the space for more weight without taking away from his athletic ability. From a stretch only look, he’s got an early lean down the mound that when on time allows the momentum to create late arm speed; when the body rushes it slows down the arm and sequencing of the body causing some control issues. Quick arm from a H-3/4 release pulling out the elbow from the glove showing extension down the hill. FB 79-81 pitching up/down in the zone being able to move the ball to both sides of the plate. SLD 68-72 flashes as above-average or better; 3/4 break, late at the plate when the fingers drive through the pitch. CHG 70-71 with bottom using in the bottom half of the zone. Was able to pitch around some control issues and showed a projectable combination of pitches.

CCB World Series - The high-waisted, long and lean frame projects well for Turkington both on the hill and in the field. On the mound, the compact elbow swings the arm to a 3/4 release as the hands lift with the front knee. Turkington worked two strong innings showing three pitches that can develop as he matures. FB 77-79 with life at the plate and late running sink on hitters. SLD 70-72 was tight and late having feel of the pitch on both sides and freezing hitters for Ks. CHG 68-72 with some late bottom as well; didn’t use it much in the viewing. He also showed good footwork in the middle infield with the ability to make plays, but his upside might be on the mound.
