2/15/20: For the strong framed 6-foot-4, 215 pound power armed righty from Southern California, it’s never been a matter of the stuff, but it has taken awhile to harness it. He earned the W with 5.2 shutout innings of two-hit baseball against Cal Poly, sitting 93-94 mph with his fastball, while touching 96. He spins two different breaking balls that he throws in the 2300-2500 rpm range. Undrafted last June as an eligible sophomore, he’s had limited success in the past seasons (2019: 1-1, 6.04 ERA, 22.1 IP, 26 H, 10 BB, 16 SO). Beers will shoot up draft boards if he continues to replicate his first start of the 2020 season.
7/10/18: 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, big strong athletic build. Prototypical frame for a pitcher. Throws from high three-quarters slot with a fast live arm. Hides the ball in his delivery which creates deception to hitters. Command was shaky at times, but his athleticism shows that he will be able to improve this aspect of his game. Fastball sat 89-91 mph, touched 92 a couple times. Fastball has good life to it with arm side run. Threw a lot of sweeping sliders at 81-83 mph that generated swing and misses. Potential future plus pitch. Also threw a very impressive 11/5 curveball that he used to strike out a pair off batters. Good athlete on the mound who fields his position well. Overall, Beers has a power arm, with impressive secondary offerings, high upside guy. (Joe Pera)
