A 2019 California State Games participant, our scouts are very familiar with Kay. The senior appears ready for a breakout season if what he showed with the bat is any indication. Already a very strong defensive catcher - consistent pop times of 2.01-2.12 - Kay showed a more compact swing that gets the barrel to-and-through the zone on plane allowing him to use his strength to drive balls into the gaps. Behind the plate he uses a wider, athletic setup providing a large target. There’s rhythm to his motions behind the plate where he’s quick out of the crouch and shows good lateral movement. Handled upper-80’s velocity easily during the bullpen session.

PBR CA STATE GAMES - Medium frame tight muscle in upper half. Simple swing with quiet load and loose hands working flat through the zone; was right on pitches during the weekend unable to find hits from good swings. Caught a runner at 2nd during the game and showed good catch and throw skills; arm with consistent release and ability to keep the ball consistently on the bag (2.12-2.22 Pop).

Los Angeles Open - Kay is showing impressive physical growth since we last saw him at the SoCal Underclass Games. His body is beginning to fill out with strength from the top down. As a result of the added strength Kay is showing more explosion at the plate where his smooth, short path to the ball generated line drives to all fields. He continues to do an excellent job with the lower half in his swing as his short stride and quick hips allow him to generate torque and clearance for his barrel path. Defensively Kay continues to be one of the most sound catchers we've seen this year. His is arm is getting stronger but the accuracy remains. He popped in the 1.97-2.04 range on the day with all throws on the bag. He shows average quickness behind the plate, but his ability to block and recover, along with his big arm makeup for any quickness issues.

SoCal Underclass Games - Five-foot-11, 170-pounds. Long, lean frame with long limbs and a high waist and large feet. Big hands and strength through forearms. Present strength in thighs. Behind the plate he shows a quiet setup with soft hands playing on the balls of his feet. Exchanges are clean and quick. Arm is compact in the back with accuracy on throws. Kay stays in line with his feet with athletic actions behind the plate. The rising junior has shown marked improvement with the bat where he has a short, simple load and good balance throughout his swing with a middle approach. Path is short with extension through it. Took three great at-bats in-game barrelling all of them up resulting in an F8, line drive single to left-center field, and a line drive single to center field before taking second on the throw.
