This was my first look at Bernstine, and the Cal commit caught my eye on both sides of the ball. At the plate, Bernstine opened with two straight XBH and reached base in all four trips. With Vallejo down 3-0 early, Bernstine got a rally started in the bottom of the 1st, barreling a 2-0 FB up into LCF for an RBI double. In his second AB, Bernstine would belt a 2-2 FB away and send it over the fence in RCF for a solo shot. Bernstine would finish his day with two straight BB’s, working multiple deep counts. In the box, Bernstine shows power to all fields, consistently finding the barrel thanks to his good bat speed, compact swing, and selective approach. Defensively, Bernstine demonstrates fluid actions at SS with good instincts. His plus baseball IQ was highlighted in the top of the 5th, when Richmond had a runner on 1st. Bernstine let a weak liner hit directly at him drop with hopes of turning a DP. However, the batter was called out due to some confusion on the field about a potential IF fly rule. With a solid arm at SS, Bernstine has the potential to stick at the position at the next level to go along with his solid all-around profile.
