A standout at the West Coast ProCase last summer, the first noticeable thing on Velazquez is his increased physicality. Has added 10-pounds of mass to his 6’3” frame with increased athleticism as well. A smooth mover on the dirt, Velazquez made two difficult plays look routine. A high baseball IQ player, he was in position to make plays all days showing instincts to get to spots that others might not have been. At the dish he showed well as the opposing pitchers focused on not giving him much to hit. Barreled a ball through the middle of the field for a single in his first at-bat of the day. Later he showed the strength gains paying off when he muscled and a jam shot into center field for another hit. Both hits moved runners into scoring position. A draft prospect this year, Velazquez had the half dozen scouts in attendance taking notice. One scout told me that if he finishes the season on a tear, he’s certain to climb draft boards. A few college coaches in attendance said they’d wished he was coming their way. As it stands, Velazquez has shown enough defensively to get the attention of decision makers with respect to the draft, and with half a season left, he has an opportunity to do the same with the bat.
Diego Velazquez, CRESPI CARMELITE HIGH SCHOOL (CA), 2025 Southern California
Positional Profile: SS/RHP Loud tools with up the middle defensive profile and LH hitting profile that flashes impact.
Body: 6-2, 191-pounds. Athletic frame with some present strength to it and room to continue adding across the upper and lower body.
Hit: LHH. Taller balanced stance with weight slighlty towards back side. Hands are set high above ear height and close to the head with a flat bat angle. Hands stay loose with some waggle. Rear elbow is high. Small knee lift with front leg and small stride in the forward move. Hands push back with a small hitch down before getting back up into loaded position. Barrel tips forward and lands taller at launch with somewhat of a linear shift to his weight in the swing. Turns well with his rear shoulder to drive his hands and barrel through the baseball. Path works more uphill that plays to pull side lift with leverage to the middle of the field. Bat to ball is there, but barrel awareness needs polish.
Power: 98 max exit velocity, averaged 90.5 mph. 387' max distance. Has strength through the ball with some loud pull side impact which plays to the lift in his path. There is feel to get the bat on the ball, but polishing his barrel awareness and timing/approach will help him tap into impact more consistently.
Arm: RH. INF-93 mph. Strength is present to arm with short back swing and arm speed through the throw. Ball carries well with generally good accuracy to his throws. Comfortable throwing from a variety of different arm slots.
Defense: Glove is confident with easy actions playing 1 or 2 handed and feet work in rhythm with quickness to them. Can play high with his hips at times. Moves easily laterally to both sides while coming downhill with body control.
ATH: 28.10 max vertical.
