A big-name recruit, Bergin got his feet wet with 67 innings as a freshman, then got off to a sterling start as UCLA’s Sunday starter in 2020, going 4-0, 1.27 with 27 strikeouts and seven walks in 21.1 innings. A big physical workhorse with a short high three-quarters arm action and moderate effort, Bergin pitched comfortably at 90-93 and touched 94 in our look this spring, getting some strikeouts using his 81-84 slider with solid late tilt, flashing plus on occasion. He also has a useful 82-84 changeup against lefties. Bergin’s three-pitch mix and physicality give him a chance to stick as a starter in pro ball, and he could jump into the first round if he continues to progress in 2021.
2/24/19: Also impressing for UCLA was freshman Jesse Bergin, the Sunday starter for the Bruins. Bergin kept the Yellow Jackets off balance from his first pitch to his last (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 SO) by consistently spotting up a lively, low-90s fastball, mixing two breaking balls (83 mph slider, 78 mph curve) and a 83-84 changeup. He maintained his velocity throughout while throwing any pitch in any count to any location. (Seifert)
