An athletically built RH hitter who played 2B for the San Dimas squad and hit in the five-hole, this first impression as the young talent was a strong one. Over the course of four at bats he showed off a solid present offensive profile with a leveraged bat path, solid feel to use his lower ½, strong use of the hands to deliver the barrel, sound approach with consistent bat to ball against two different pitchers. Calcanas took three trips to the dish against a LHP who was throwing backwards, consistently staying away with his soft stuff and trying to sneak the FB by the RH hitters on the inner half. During those three at-bats he put together three very quality appearances first stinging a CHG up away right at the 1B in a 2K count showing his plate coverage and discipline to stay back and use the whole field. For his second at bat Calcanas capitalized on a mistake out over the plate staying in his lower ½ effectively when he was slightly early to the launch position while keeping his hands back he rode the back leg down to stay on plane with the offering and flashed his sneaky impact when he launched a HR down the LF line. His third trip was another solid at bat staying on an outer half CHG which he hit hard at the 2B, but then showed a solid to strong present run tool getting down the line with athleticism. For his final trip to the dish Calcanas faced off with a mid-80’s RHP who was attacking heavily on his FB with quality ride up in the zone and the RH hitter jumped on a middle/away FB at 85 MPH to line it into RCF for a single capping a 2-4 day. Defensively, his actions at 2B showed well during INF/OF with consistent hands, solid present arm for the spot, comfort playing laterally while showing some present feel to get downhill and was solid in game fielding his opportunities cleanly. It’s not a present dynamic defensive profile, but a solid one which should stick on the INF dirt.
