3/18/26
Villanueva showed a well-rounded four-pitch mix with command, striking out six while walking two in his outing. He worked 89-91 mph, touching 92, with a fastball that showed both ride and heaviness through the zone. The arsenal also included a 73 mph curveball, a 76-78 mph sweeper-style slider that generated swing-and-miss, and an 81-83 mph changeup that added another high quality look for hitters. Despite the strong stuff, defensive miscues behind him extended innings and drove up the pitch count, ultimately leading to a losing effort that didn’t fully reflect how well he threw. Villanueva’s delivery adds deception, making it tough for hitters to pick up the ball early. Physically, the gains since last spring are noticeable, particularly in the lower half, pointing to time spent developing in the weight room. With improved strength and a complete mix, his overall profile continues to trend in a positive direction leading up to his arrival at San Diego State this upcoming fall.
4/24/22

Physical: 6-2, 175 pounds; Projectable frame, high waisted athletic build. 7.19 runner in the 60.

Offensively: RHH. Even setup, with feet shoulder width apart; flat bat to start. Short take back with the hands. Stays behind the ball while showing an average effort from the legs. Showed a flat swing path with a two handed finish.  More line drives than flyballs and groundballs with a peak exit velocity of 91 MPH via Trackman. Slight lean into the backside in load. Rhythmic hands. Present barrel accuracy. Advanced bat speed for a '26. Balanced at finish.

Defensively: OF - 85 MPH. Moved around well in the OF. Relaxed approach. Around and through. Fluid action from glove/exchange to crow hop. Above average arm strength. 4/5 accurate throws with a mix of on the fly and one-hop throws.

Pitching: Uses a center rubber setup while using a side step. Mid chest leg drive with shoulders above the hips. Has a long stride landing inline with the plate. Moderate arm swing while slight stabbing downward; Square to the plate with finish. Still head. Stays over the rubber well. Controlled easy mover. FB: Peak velo of 82 MPH, while sitting 80-82 MPH; straight action. CB: 58-60 MPH; slurve like action. CH: 67-74 MPH; sinks with a little fade.
