9/20/19

Fall tournament - Uncommitted; A strong and physical player, the ball was jumping off his bat, in the middle of the field. He's got a 'hitterish' presence at the plate and there is intent to do damage with each swing. The power potential is very much real and frankly, there are only a handful of senior SS in the region who have his type of physicality at the plate. As impressive as the bat speed and strength was the consistency o fhis swing path, staying inside the ball and staying behind the ball, allowing him to see it well and to be that physical at contact. Defensively he showed off an arm that will play above average at SS or 3B.. He's not only got tools for major college baseball, Nunez will end up on the radar of MLB scouts at some point, whether in the spring or during his college career.

Underclass tourney - Large frame with long legs/arms; present strength, but very lean. Body has projectability with extra strength only improving overall profile; will need to stay on top of flexibility to stay fluid as hitter and fielder. Narrow, slightly open stance with bat resting on shoulder; lifts bat to north/south on small foot lift load. Regularly on time with multiple pitches and ability to use load to stay behind baseball; quick hands matched with very quick back hip (85 mph Exit Velo). Multiple hits in multiple games including extra base hits and showing raw pull pop; turned around 88 from RHP in one game with missile back up the middle. Defensively showed quick reactions at hot corner with ability to come get topped ball and throw accurately on the run; above average arm (78 mph from OF and SS) with quick, accurate release. Shorter stride that can be improved to help running ability (7.7-60yd), but has ability to turn it up to next level when needed. /// Was 3-4 with a double. Makes consistent contact. Solid glove at 3B and has a good accurate arm. Turned around an 88 MPH fastball for a single.

At Salina - Uncommitted. Medium, long frame with length in the lower half and a tight waist; body is starting to firm up and strengthen with wide shoulders. At the plate, stands balanced and relaxed resting bat on back shoulder; rocks into back hip as hands work back and up with back elbow lifting as well. Controlled and short foot lift as hands work on quick arc turning the barrel before level bat path in swing. Times where his weight gets over the front foot causing some inconsistent barrel control and saps some power from the backside; when on time has the ability to drive the ball gap-to-gap. Two RBI in game and tends to have his best AB’s when runners are in scoring position. Quick short stride with playable speed around the field and on defense (4.46 H-1st, 4.68T). At SS again for this game and plays the position like a 3B taking strong angles and working through the ball on the move. Has good in-game knowledge and willing to leave his feet to keep ball in infield; 1st and 2nd situation as ground ball pushed him to arm-side hole where he made easy force out at 3rd base and another play where he dove up the middle and got up quickly preventing a runner from coming around the bag at 3rd. Arm is loose and compact with plenty of strength for the left side of the infield. The instincts in the infield and chance to be a gap-to-gap extra base hitter continue to show up with the chance to make more jumps as he continues to add strength.

vs Carmel - today was the first time I’d seen him at SS. Nunez went 1-2 with 2 runs, 2 walks and 2 stolen bases showing he can help the team even when he’s not driving the ball. His body has definitely firmed up from the summer with a high waist and strength in the lower half while showing some rolled shoulders. At the plate Nunez stands with a balanced set up and even hands that work back and up on a quick rock before attacking the ball with aggressive full body turns. The bat is quick showing strength in it’s flat bat path where he just missed a few pitches, fouling them off and putting together quality at bats. On the bases he keeps quick, short feet and has good instincts using those more than blazing speed to steal bases. Nunez’s defense at SS had some ups and downs showing off a good arm that can stay on the left side of the infield and a soft glove in pregame. During the game he misplayed a ball up the middle and then rushed the throw giving away a run. His reactions are quick and after seeing him play 3B during the summer, I think that’s a good spot for him in the future. Playing SS at this level will give him some opportunities to understand angles and spacing and when he will need to come attack the ball.
