4/6/19: Garcia has has been up and down since returning from the flexor inflammation that sidelined him early this spring. He looked strong on Sunday, even though he gave up five runs — four of them via long balls by Will Matthiessen (a three-run shot) and Tim Tawa (two solo shots). But aside from those three mistakes, he was outstanding, striking out 11 and walking just one in seven innings of work. Most encouragingly, he seemed to get stronger as the game went along. He worked at 87-90 with his fastball in the first inning, but he settled in at 89-92 thereafter, and pounded 92-93 in the sixth, when he struck out the side in order. He bumped 94 mph once. Garcia pitched heavily off his heater, which has a high spin rate and induces plenty of swing-and-misses up in the zone, but his slider also got better as the game progressed, showing sharp, late power tilt at 82-84 in the middle innings, after looking flatter with less power at 81 in the first inning. He used his changeup sparingly against Stanford's righty-dominant lineup, but he threw a few promising ones. Garcia has a slight build at 6-foot, 180 pounds, but he has a quick arm and a clean, compact arm action with minimal effort from a high three-quarters slot. His feel for pitching and high spin rate fastball are his greatest assets, but his slider flashes above-average and he has enough feel for a changeup to give him a chance to stick as a starter in pro ball. 8/20/18Six-foot-one, 185 pounds. Athletic frame with a medium build. Easy actions with advanced body control. Mechanically sound delivery. Consistent direction towards target. Arm action is clean and compact. Quality three-pitch mix. Fastball sits 91-94 (2300-2400 rpm). Might need to find a way to add deception/movement to make it a tougher look. Above average slider at 82-83 mph (2300-2400 rpm). Shows same spin rate as FB. Tough to pick up out of hand. Also shows feel for changeup at 74-77 (2000 rpm). Understands how to mix offerings and consistently induce weak contact. Pitching comes very easily to Garcia. Likely early Day Two selection in 2019. (Seifert)
