The Aztecs' ace has a lanky, athletic frame at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds. Against Nevada on Friday night, he went seven innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out five. He pitches with regular effort through a high-3/4 slot, working quickly and throwing strikes. It's control over command, but he can move the fastball around the zone a bit. It ranged from 90-94, touching 95. It's relatively straight and got barreled as the outing progressed and he tried to get it above hitters' hands too often. The slider flashed sharpness, sitting 79-82, but was mostly fringe average with gradual break. His best secondary offering was the changeup. It was firm, sitting 86-87, showing sink and fade. He is now 4-2 with a 1.82 ERA on the season with 61 strikeouts, 13 walks and 53 hits allowed in 59 innings.
8/15/20
The super athletic 6-foot-4, 205 pound right-hander is a potential star in the making. Melton features a 92-95 mph fastball that he works up and down in the zone and a plus, low-80s slider. He also will show a solid third pitch in a mid-80s changeup. Melton was off to a solid start in what looked to be a breakout season, finishing 2020 with a 3-1 record while recording 26 strikeouts in 22.1 IP. Although still rather new to pitching after just 2.2 IP as a true freshman in 2019, he has shown an excellent aptitude and accelerated development during his time at SDSU. Look for Melton to jump even more onto the national radar this fall.
