Swafford continues to cement himself as one of the most complete and talented athletes in the 2028 class. Defensively, Swafford has everything you'd expect from a long-term shortstop. The 5-10, 170-pound prospect showed the range, athleticism, and instincts that immediately separate him from many players in the class. His 86 mph arm was accurate across the diamond, and while the rapid-fire fungo session likely prevented him from fully airing it out, it gave him every opportunity to showcase his complete defensive skill set. The hands are soft, the actions are fluid, and there is a natural ease to everything he does on the dirt. At the plate, Swafford put together what was arguably the best all-around BP round of the event. His barrel control is elite, consistently spraying line drives to all fields while also showing the ability to create loft and impact to the pull side when he wants to. The offensive profile is further elevated by an advanced understanding of the strike zone. Swafford routinely takes quality pitches just off the edges, works deep counts, and rarely gives away at-bats, traits that consistently put him in favorable hitting situations. Ironically, the most impressive at-bat of the day may have been one that ended in a strikeout. Facing Andrew Carlson, who had already struck out four consecutive hitters while sitting 94-96 mph, Swafford stepped in as the fifth batter and immediately showed a different level of competitiveness. He fouled a fastball straight back, spoiled multiple two-strike secondary pitches that other hitters had been swinging through, and worked himself into a battle that seemed destined to continue. The at-bat ultimately ended on a called strike three on a fastball that appeared out of the zone, but the result hardly mattered. What stood out was the ability to compete, adjust, and refuse to give away an at-bat against an arm with his premium 'A' stuff. The combination of tools Swafford possesses makes him one of the premier prospects in the 2028 class. Every viewing seems to reinforce the same conclusion: he is going to be one of the most heavily followed and highly sought-after players in the country over the coming years.

Swafford sits in the number two spot in the 2028 class in deference to a 100+ MPH sophomore arm, but would easily be the number one player without that presence. Swafford missed some time earlier in the spring with a moderate injury to his shoulder, but has quickly acclimated himself to the lineup upon his return. Playing in the DH role for this live look, Swafford took three trips to the plate and posted three productive and quality at-bats. Facing a LHP with quality present stuff in his first two at-bats, his ability to stay on spin moving away from him with a FB running in on his hands while making consistent contact with his balls in play, each coming solidly off the barrel, was a testament to Swafford’s advanced offensive ability as a pure hitter. The highlight of those two ABs was a nine-pitch battle with a runner at 3rd base and less than two outs, where Swafford fouled off an early FB before falling behind 1-2 then battling back to a 3-2 count, spoiling 2K offerings to each side of the field before drilling a hard two-hopper ground ball up the middle for an RBI groundout. Swafford capped the day by ambushing an early count FB from a righthander and drilling another two-hopper up the middle to reach base on a fielder's choice. Even on a day where Swafford didn’t collect a hit, the pureness of what he does at the plate stands out with the adjustability in his swing, pitch recognition, simplicity in the load, and consistency for timing to launch. With his upper body beginning to fill out and the athleticism to his overall profile, the talented LHH sophomore continues to solidify himself as not only the top tier of talent in California but across the nation.

2/18/25

A freshman starting on a team that has high expectations this spring immediately catches your attention. Then you watch Swafford in the box and you see why. Shows a very advanced approach for a player his age in that he doesn’t chase bad pitches and sticks to his plan at the plate. The swing itself is controlled and rhythmic with present bat and hand speed. He manages to keep the barrel on plane through zone on a consistent basis and spoiled seven pitches in pitchers counts. Finished only with one hit in the game - a hard hit line drive to center field - but showed the tools that will make one of the better players in his class.
