USA CNT: One of the highest-ranked prospects to bypass the draft in favor of the college ranks two years ago, Montgomery has struggled to translate his premium ability into results in his first two collegiate seasons, posting a 4.50 ERA in 2021 and a 5.00 ERA in 2022, serving as the midweek starter both years. He did strike out more than a batter per inning in both seasons, but his opponents’ batting averages were mediocre (in the .240s), and his walk rates were higher than ideal, though that rate declined in his sophomore year. Montgomery worked three scoreless innings in the Stars vs. Stripes series, looking fantastic in a 1-2-3 frame and then working out of a jam in his second inning before following it up with a strong third frame. His command can come and go, but his stuff is undeniably electric, and his strong, athletic 6-3, 205-pound frame looks how scouts would draw it up. His high three-quarters arm action might be a bit too clean, allowing hitters to see it out of his hand, potentially explaining why he gets few swing-and-misses with his 94-96 mph fastball, which has good horizontal break but low induced vertical break. His putaway pitch on all three strikeouts in Durham was his slider, an 82-85 mph offering that flashes plus with spin rates into the 2600s. He also showed a useful cutter at 89-91, and in the past we’ve seen him throw a below-average changeup at 87-90. The ingredients are still there for Montgomery to become a premium draft pick; he just needs to repeat his delivery a little more consistently and refine his command of his entire repertoire.

10/12/18

10/12/18 - Florida State commit. 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed pitcher, athletic, strong frame, continues to physically fill out in all portions of frame. Arm action is short and quick, fastball sat 92-94, controlled. Slider, a true plus pitch, played at 86 mph with tight spin, 11/5 shape, maintains arm slot. Hard changeup at 88 mph. Struck out four batters in two innings of work. One of the most impressive arms to throw at Florida Diamond Club, frame plus present abilities make him a high value prospect in the 2020 draft.

07/03/18- Florida State recruit, Montgomery has really filled out his frame, especially in the lower half and overall has made some huge strides on the mound. Has a clean, quick arm and the fastball sits 90-93 mph touching 94. The slider has shown potential in the past and has now turned into a true plus pitch. Works at 81-84 mph with hard and late breaking with tight spin, coming out of the same tunnel as the fastball. Extremely athletic with still much more to come.

07/13/17- Committed to Florida State University.

01/21/17- The 6-foot-1, 175-pound RHP/OF has impressed throughout summer and fall events and did not disappoint at the Preseason All-State. He has always shown an extremely quick arm and he made a big jump both from the outfield and on the mound. From the outfield he went from 82 mph to 90 mph and on the mound he previously topped out at 84 in the fall to 86 at this event and 88 at an event two weeks prior. Along with the electric arm, he showed an above average slider that was extremely tight and has the potential to develop into a plus pitch at 73-75 mph. He still struggles a bit with command, but as he gains innings and learns to pitch with less effort the velocity will jump and the command will improve. Offensively, he also shows above average bat speed for his class. There is some length, but he has a feel for the barrel. He shows big time all around tools and will be extremely interesting to watch how he continues to progress.

10/02/16- The 6-foot-1, 175 pound OF/RHP who participated in the Underclass Games, but was not able to throw due to a sickness, was able to throw at the South Florida Open. There is still a lot of arms and legs going different directions, but when he is balanced and gets extension the ball jumps out of his hand. His fastball currently works in the 81-83 mph range, but when he can get balanced consistently, use his lower half and get extended that will jump very quickly. He also showed a slider that ranged from 72-73 mph that has good shape when he gets extended and a changeup at 75 mph.  There is a lot of upside and he has the frame and athleticism to grow into all of the potential with the sky being the limit.

9/23/16 - The Underclass Games participant was able to throw this weekend and did not disappoint. We saw the athleticism and bat speed offensively last week, but on the mound there is big time potential. With a lot going on in the delivery, he still lands on line and showcases an extremely clean and quick arm. His fastball ranged from 82-84 mph with a sharp slider ranging from 76-78 mph and a 73 mph changeup. The all-around tools are present with a frame to continue to build and grow on. There is a lot to like and will make him one of the top 2020’s in the country.

09/17/16- The 6-foot-1, 175 pound athlete is very intriguing as he features a frame and athleticism that will play at the next level.  He showed a good understanding at the plate with quick bat speed and the ability to square the ball up and use all of the field. His throws from the outfield were online and accurate with some carry. Has been up to 84 with his fastball on the mound as well. His solid frame along with maturity will allow him to develop into a potential big time prospect in the future.

08/24/16- Strong, athletic, solid build for his age. Projectable arm with more velocity to come as he sat 82-83 mph with his fastball which had some downhill action, up to 84 while mixing in a 70-71 mph curveball and a 75 mph change up during his bullpen. Some moving parts, but the arm strength is there. High ceiling with more to come. Athleticism in the outfield. Aggressive, confident approach at the plate. Makes hard contact, has a feel for the barrel , and can drive the ball into the gaps when he squares it up.
