02/21/18- After pitching the night before, he played third on this night. He is an average defender and should be athletic enough to stay at third. The bat played well tonight, he works with a lot of rhythm in his swing and when he is on time, there is above average power. His hands are both loose and strong and has a fairly good approach. There are a lot of tools to like and follow, could be a draft for 2018, but may be better after three years at Florida.

02/20/18- Roberto Pena started for Calvary and would work out of a first inning jam and settle in to go six innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out two. Pena worked 88-90 mph most of the game topping out at 92 mph early. He didn’t have his best offspeed, but flashed a quality slider at 75-78 mph and battled through a tough Pace lineup.

10/15/17- Florida recruit. An athletic two-way player has a lot of potential and creates the discussion on which side he projects better. On the mound, the velocity was down a bit from where he has been in the past. He fastball sat 88-90, but shows a loose easy high 3/4 arm action. Shows a short, tight slider at 75076 mph that can be a swing and miss pitch. He has some drop and drive and the velocity has been inconsistent, but there is some upside on the mound. Offensively,he has a strong lower half, and creates rhythm and stays on time with his swing. He turns the barrel and it stays in the zone a long time with bat lag. He has a feel for the barrel and present poull power with more power potential. He has stayed lean and shows the ability to play third. He has a lot of upside, but the offensive upside is bigger with the chance to have above average hit and power tools.

04/11/17 - Florida recruit. Currently ranked No. 15 in the Florida 2018 Class, No. 53 Overall. Currently stands at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds with a strong lower half and solid, athletic build. Confident, calm approach at the plate with above average bat speed and quick hands through the zone. Generates power with good use of his lower half as he displayed the ability to drive the ball out of the park not only on the pull side, but over the right-center field wall as well. Consistently finds the barrel and makes hard contact. Shows good patience and awareness of the strike zone. On the mound Pena displayed a quick arm with a simple delivery as his fastball was mostly in the 88-92 mph range with plenty of movement. Reached back and touched 91 into the fifth inning. Also threw a slider for strikes that sat 77-79 mph with depth. Threw a couple changeups at 81-82 mph. Impressed all throughout the week and delivered the walk-off RBI single to win the game in the bottom of the seventh in Flangan’s last game of the week.

01/21/17- Florida commit. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound 3B/RHP is physically impressive. Another two-way player, Pena began the day standing out in batting practice. He consistently found the barrel, driving multiple balls out to the pull side. He creates a lot of whip in the bat with a strong lower half. Prototypical third baseman build and shows sound hands with an above average arm topping out at 87 mph. On the mound, he shows a clean, easy arm action with fastball ranging from 87-89 mph. Ball comes out of his hand well. He also showed a feel for a slider and a changeup. Overall, was very impressive on both sides of the ball and has the potential to be a true two-way player at Florida.

10/23/16- Florida recruit. Strong lower half and creates a lot of bat speed. He tends to leak his front side open at times, but has a good path and the ball jumps off of the bat. He went for 3-for-13 with two singles and a double over the course of the weekend. He also showed a strong arm at 85-86 mph on the mound.

7/22/16- Committed to the University of Florida.

6/14/16- Uncommitted incoming junior currently ranked No. 49 in the Florida 2018 class, No. 221 overall. Strong, athletic build standing at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds with a strong lower half. Shows some good bat speed and the ability to square the ball up with some loft in his swing. Displayed some pull side pop. Aggressive runner with good instincts on the base paths. Makes the plays in the field and shows good actions with an on line and accurate arm from across the diamond.

7/10/19: After seeing little game action this past spring in Gainesville, Pena has been a regular in the Kenosha lineup and is piling up much needed reps. The results have been mixed from a production standpoint, with the Florida freshman slashing just .194/.302/.292 thus far, but game-to-game improvements have been apparent in the box. The sturdily built infielder generates good leverage through a strong core and solid extension through contact, with some natural loft in the swing and enough strength to mature into at least average power. The bat speed is adequate and the quality of at bats has been steadily improving over the course of the summer. Pena still struggles with timing and can be tripped up with quality change-of-pace sequencing, but he’s getting better – the Gator racked up four multi-strikeout games (and 16 total strikeouts) in his first ten games of the summer and none since (and only six strikeouts total), covering 11 contests. A below-average runner, the Venezuelan native is at home on the infield corner and has a plus arm that plays easily at third, where the hands and feet work well enough. A talented two-way player in high school, Pena is getting exactly what he needs this summer – consistent game action – and it’s starting to pay off. It would not be a surprise to see him return to Gainesville and make some noise this fall. (Faleris)
