5/25/23

UGA Commit. 6-foot-3, 185 pounds. He’s had a string of good outings this spring whenever PBR Georgia has been in attendance, but this was my 1st ever look at him. When you watch his delivery, you immediately notice the ease of operation and long levers. Although his velocity may be at a plateau currently, there is still considerable projection in the frame that can be realized with the proper strength/flexibility/arm care training. He’s a very efficient mover with a loose yet compact garden hose arm action, and his direction to the plate is near perfect. He was beyond impressive in the State Championship, as his gutsy complete game performance was like watching Picasso paint. Chavis absolutely dotted his late tailing 85-86 FB (T88 in past) to both edges from a near sidearm slot that creates disgusting angle to the glove side, freezing RHH with regularity. But he has an even bigger weapon, the bugs bunny CH in the mid 70’s that stomps on the brakes just before reaching home plate. The life on it is nearly identical to his FB with fade and late depth that gets whiffs both in and out of the zone. This dude pronates like it's his job, and his effortless delivery allows him to sell the pitch better than a magician could. Ryker also mixes in a sweeping CB in the 71-74 range that is very effective vs LHH, and he has the feel to place it back door to RHH as well. Although he’s unlikely to end up a flamethrower, there is plenty of untapped velocity in the frame. His plus pitchability will allow him to get early work at the D1 level, and he has the potential to be a very solid draft prospect if he can sit in the 88-91 range with his FB in college.

6-foot-3 185-pounds. Georgia commit. Chavis got one inning of work in the scrimmage vs Mount Paran on Friday. He came out swinging for his first official start of the year. The fastball was ticked up from the scrimmage and much sharper. He was 86-88 and mixed in his big, slower curveball at 68-70. The velocity difference in the two pitches keeps the hitter guessing. Then he will mix in the change up to make his fastball look even better. He worked quickly with an easy tempo, and clean delivery. The pitchability from Chavis will give him the chance to get innings next year as a freshman. The frame will continue to fill out, which will add mph to his fastball.
