LHP/OF Sam Driscoll (Mt. Zion) provided an upside look on both sides of the ball throughout the State Games. Starting with the bat, the left-left uncommitted prospect reached a max exit velocity of 97.2 mph during batting practice, while putting up numerous quality at-bats during gameplay. Driscoll is an athletic 5-foot-9, 166-pounds, with easy foot speed - evident by his 6.64 60 time, as well as numerous home to first times under 4.65. He also showed well on the bump, sitting 85-88 mph with a fastball that played with carry (avg. 15.3” IVB), challenging hitters in the zone with the pitch. Driscoll’s slider showed sharp spin (avg. 2426 rpm) at 74-77 mph to earn swing and miss. He would also turn over a changeup at 74-77 mph with downer fade to complete his pitch mix.

3/30/24
Uncommitted. 5-foot-9, 163-pound athlete with compact strength. Came away a winner from the Preseason All-State this winter and impressed during this live look. Started in center field and hit leadoff for the Braves, also pitched in the second game of this conference double-header. Polished at the plate in all aspects of his game. Doesn’t expand the strike zone, swung and missed one time in the strike zone in four at-bats, confident takes. Stays short and direct to contact, keeps a level barrel with length through the hitting zone. High bat-to-ball skills, profiles as a true top-of-the-order left-handed bat. Had two hits in this look - a backspun double to kickoff a run scoring rally and a two strike RBI single to the opposite field after working a deep count. Has a complete understanding of himself and his offensive game. Showed above-average foot speed in center field with a quick first step and accurate rountes. Arm played true with carry in I/O and showed twice in game, both on throws to home. Took the mound in the second game of the double-header, allowing two unearned runs on three hits over four innings of work, striking out five while walking two. Athletic mover down the mound, quick arm that works from a high ¾ window. Fastball touched 86 mph earlier, pitching in the low-to-mid-80s. Spun two breaking balls, both in the low-70s; a more vertically spun curveball off a 1/7 axis and sweeping, more slurvy-type slider with true lateral tilt.

OF Sam Driscoll (Mt. Zion) is an upside bat that stood out to our staff over the weekend. He has quick, whippy hands through the zone (23.6 mph avg; T24.2 mph) that work into a flat path, looking to keep the ball on a line up the middle and to his pull-side with a max EV of 92.1 mph, highly athletic look that has a chance to pop in the next couple years. Athletic mover with a 6.97 in the 60, fluid footwork in the outfield with steady hands, attacks the baseball. Well above-average arm-strength, topping out at 91 mph from a crow hop.
5/13/23
Lean, athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame. Took the mound for the Braves in a conference game against a tough Mahomet-Seymour squad, not allowing an earned run over four innings of work. Athletic and controlled operation, hands rock over head to start, sits into his backside and stays on it downhill. Short strider, works closed and across his body some. Long arm swing finishes out of a loose, easy high ¾ slot. Fastball comes out clean, touching 85 mph a few times early, pitching in the low-to-mid-80s throughout with late arm-side run. Confident in both his secondaries, landed a slurvey breaking ball for strikes at 69-72 and turned over a changeup to right-handed hitters at 74-76 mph. Threw all three of his pitches for strikes. Also a varsity basketball player and golfer at Mt. Zion. An athletic sophomore southpaw to follow that recently debuted inside our updated 2025 rankings.

Driscoll hosts an athletic build at 5-foot-10, 160-pounds. Took the bump on Thursday against an older age-level and did more than hold his own. Clean mechanics with a short draw from the glove and whippy arm action. Fastball sat 78-80 mph, T82 mph, however Driscoll has plenty left in the tank. Kept hitters off-balanced with a breaking ball that plays with depth. Final line: 4 IP, 1 H, 6 K.
