Darret Branson, 2028, RHP, Evansville Mater Dei: Though I have not seen all of the talented 2028 arms in the state to this point in the spring, Branson has given me one of the best looks of any. He is high-waisted with a projectable, 6-foot-3, 185-pound frame that still has room for growth. He turned in four innings, scattered 5 hits, walked zero, and struck out 7. He got tagged for 2 early earned runs before settling in for three straight zeros. He pitched at 84-86 mostly, and reached back for 87s when needed and held that into the fourth, and also grabbed a couple 88s and an 89 late in-counts. The fastball plays with carry life at the top. His breaking ball flashed bite, but was mostly a 68-71 mph offering that he flipped for strikes to change pace. He showed a a mid-70s change that he went to sparingly. The upside and control is what I like best with Branson; filled the zone at a 70-plus % clip in my look.

Showing steady trends and continuing to provides a starters' look, Branson attacked the zone with conviction with a polished 3-pitch mix out of a faster-paced delivery. Lifting to an even balance point and landing square to home with a quick, clean arm on the backside, Darret pitched at 87-88+ with a carry fastball while tunneling a sharp, low-70s 2400+ curveball off of it for strikes. He faded an upper-70s change below the zone that was executed at a quality clip, as well. I love the downhill nature of the delivery, especially with the way he is able to flood the zone. There is easy projections left to the athletic, square-shouldered, high-waisted frame to expect the velocity to continue to steadily trend in the right direction.

Frame / Athleticism: Athletic, high-waisted, 6-foot-2, 175 pound frame. Ample projection in the frame. Stuff: FB 80-83 with carry (17.4" IVB avg.) and he was in zone with it at 85% rate, the best of the day. 69-70 CB has bigger two-plane shape and spun into the 2300s, making of out-pitch. Creates arm-side tilt on a changeup with 20" of arm-side and he showed the ability to get it to both sides. Arm Action / Delivery: Faster tempo to low, even lift, balanced at the top. Short, crossfire strider - quiet eyes. Long draw to the arm swing but syncs well. Gets to a high 3/4 slot with abv avg arm speed, drops slot on CH. Summation: Long-levered, athletic strike-throwers are safer bets and Branson checks those boxes with above average stuff for the class to go along with it. He's a multi-year Future Gamer that I have a track record with of being in the zone. He showed nothing but the same here while his stuff showed only a bit of a spike, though he's also playing basketball at the moment.
