Drew Morgan, 2028, RHP, Mt. Vernon: I saw Morgan in a start this week where he struck out 5 in 4 innings of work and threw strikes at a 65% clip. The frame is extremely projectable at 6-foot-4, 170-pounds and he is very athletic as a two-way shortstop. On the mound, it is a raw operation as he works down the slope using a simple dropNdrive with uphill shoulders. He lands square with a quick, inverted arm working to a consistent slot. He pitched at 83-85 most. I had him living 84-85 from the windup early with a couple 86s and an 87 on his second pitch of the game, and he fell to more of an 82-85 look out of the stretch & stayed there as the game went on. His best pitch is a firm, upper-70s (T80) slider that plays with lateral glove-side break. He got S/M and soft contact with the SL and controlled it well. Also turned to a 78-79 CH against LHH/RHHs; is a usable third with fade. With Morgan, I like the athleticism/upside and his ability to control the strike zone.

In a setting where intent tends to increase and control goes the other way, Morgan stayed within himself to show some of the most polished feel amongst right-handers of the day. Oozing upside with athleticism in the 6-foot-4, 170-pound frame, Morgan pitched at 86-87 as he averaged 86.6 with some bore to a fastball that he landed at a 71% clip, one of the top strike percentages amongst 85+ mph arms at the event. He was in the zone at a 60% clip with a 78-80 mph gyro-type slider that flashed sharp, and was also in the zone at a 67% clip with his 82-83 mph change. A 6.8 runner with immense projection, the feel to control the baseball, along with the athleticism he holds, presents a high-floor, high-ceiling look.

Morgan showed as one of the highest upside arms at this event, looking like a 'next-up' arm in this talented 2028 class. He has several traits indicative of future success- beginning with an athletic, 6-foot-4, 165 pound frame. He showed off his athleticism in the workout with a 6.8 60-yard dash and some barrel feel as a right-handed hitter, but the mound is where he shined most. He easily sat 82-84.5 in this look, and I saw him up to 87 in a high-leverage scenario earlier in the spring. His best pitch currently is his 75-77 sweeper, a pitch he was able to rack up swings-and-misses with, and the velocity in which he throws this pitch is well-advanced for the age. The present ability to throw strikes and spin a breaking ball establishes a safe floor, but 15 pounds of strength could easily turn Morgan into one of the premier arms in this class.
