6/4/14 - Renken is a 6-foot-, 165-pound, thin, athletic right-handed pitcher.  His name has popped up often in our discussions with high school coaches in his area and the senior right-hander has twice been named KABC 1-2A Player of the Year for his efforts the past two seasons, however we had not had a chance to see him until Wednesday.  He was more than impressive in his two innings of work showing a very simple, repeatable delivery with and a fastball in the 84-86 mph range.  He throws with effortless arm action from a natural low three-quarters slot allowing him to deliver the ball out-in-front with ease.  He also showed a 73-74 slurve-type breaking ball that has a chance to be a plus pitch.  Renken features a 73-74 sinking change-up as well.  He worked in and out of trouble facing more physical 5A, 6A hitters and showed excellent composure in doing so.  Skinny, easy-armed mid-80’s high school pitchers historically are strong candidates to advance into the low 90’s fastball range at the college level and Renken clearly fits that mold.  With his simple delivery and out-in-front release point he also is on path to develop high-level fastball command.  Going into Wednesday, Renken was unranked in the Kansas Class of 2014 and now sits in the number sixteen spot.
