The Bulldogs also rolled out arm after arm who showed velocity into the mid-90s. Of those big arms sophomore Cade Smith was the most impressive, showing a starter's repertoire, starter-type arm action and a clean delivery. The quick-armed competitor mixed a quality three-pitch arsenal, working at 92-94 and touching 95 with his No. 1. His fastball showed late giddyup up in the zone for some whiffs. He also mixed a short, above average at times, 81-83 mph breaking ball for some swing/miss (5 of 24) and sold a firm 85-88 mph changeup with good arm speed. Smith pitched seven innings on 99 pitches, allowing just one run and striking out seven.
The right-hander has shown a loose, quick arm stroke and an athletic, repeatable delivery. Filled up the zone with his fastball that sat mostly 87-89 mph. Threw two different breaking balls, a sharp slider with short, late 11/4 break at 80-81. The other had more of a 12/6 curveball with downer shape and depth at 74-76 mph.
