2021 MLB Draft: After flashing good stuff for his first to season, but struggling with his command, McGowan worked hard in the offseason to overhaul his arsenal and pitchability. He showed mid- to high-90s heat in the fall, but sat more comfortably 90-93, touching 94, this spring. He was able to get swings and misses with all three of his secondary pitches, which include an 82-85 slider that he commands consistently, a dramatically improved 84-86 changeup with solid sink that he threw to righties and lefties, and a newly developed curveball at 77-80. All four of his pitches flash at least average and the slider can be above-average at times. An athletic, 6-foot-1, 205-pounder, McGowan has learned to do a better job repeating his solid delivery, and he has put in long hours on pitch design. His work is paying off, making him a potential top-two-to-four-round pick this summer.

McGowan flashed good stuff over his first two seasons but struggled with his command, but he worked hard in the offseason to overhaul his arsenal and pitchability. He continued to show more polish in a strong outing at East Carolina on Saturday, striking out eight and walking two over 5.2 innings of one-run ball. McGowan did not show the mid-to-high-90s heat we saw from him in the fall, but he sat comfortably at 90-93 and bumped 94, and he was able to get strikeouts with all three of his secondary pitches: a quality 82-85 mph slider that he commands consistently, a dramatically improved 84-86 changeup with solid sink that he threw against righties as well as lefties, and even a newly developed curveball at 77-80. All four of his pitches flash at least average, and the slider can be above-average at times. He didn’t have great feel for the curveball for a few innings, but he snapped off some very good ones toward the end of his night, landing it for a backdoor strike or getting lefties to chase it off the back foot. He also kept his composure in tight spots and got himself out of jams to strand men in scoring position in the first, second, third and fourth innings. An athletic 6-foot-1, 205-pound righthander, McGowan has learned to do a better job repeating his solid delivery, and he has put in long hours on pitch design. His work is paying off, making him a potential top-two-to-four-rounds pick this summer. (Fitt)

Charlotte commit. 6-feet-1, 185-pound build. Smooth, athletic delivery with good tempo. Quick, easy arm action with an over-the-top slot. Commands the fastball at 88-89. Change-up can be a weapon with sink at 78-79. Solid hand speed creating deception, working in the zone. Breaking ball should continue to develop. Arm speed can be improved. Sits 72-74 with gradual, 11/5 arc. Repeats his delivery suggesting the secondary stuff will become more consistent throughout the spring.
