Preseason All-State (February 20, 2017)
Owen stands in at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds with a tall and lean athletic frame. Ran a 7.45 – 60, improved from a previous recorded time of 8.15 in February of 2016. Offensively- Righty sets up square to the pitcher with his feet wide outside his shoulders. Back leg is slightly bent while his front leg is straight and stiff. His body is upright with his hands at shoulder level resting the bat on his back shoulder. On pitch his trigger is a lift of his lead leg to place his foot in the same position while his hands bring the bat off his back shoulder to move back into his hitting position. He has quick hands to the hitting zone with a level barrel path throughout into a mid-body one handed finish. Lower body rotation could be more aggressive to get the hips through into the swing. Demonstrated consistent contact hitting line drives up the middle and to the pull side. Recorded an impressive exit velocity of 93 MPH, a 10 MPH improvement from February 2016. Defensively- Moves to the baseball well with good fielding mechanics. He gains good ground throughout crow hop towards intended target. The arm swing and release point could be longer and more on top to help make throws more accurate coming in from the outfield. Recorded a positional arm velocity of 78 MPH, a 2 MPH improvement from February 2016. Pitching- Sets up at mid-rubber with smooth mechanics. Steps to the side and brings his knee above hip crease into his power position. Shows good separation staying closed into a long and lose arm swing. Hides ball well off of front side with a good follow through. Fastball was in the 76-78 MPH range, Change Up 66-68 MPH, and his Curveball was consistent 63-65 MPH.
Owen stands 5-foot-11, 150-pounds with a lean build, frame that can hold more weight as he matures. He ran an 8.15 60. Offensively - wide balanced setup with a no-stride approach on the pitch. Hips slide some early as he back loads creating a slight arm-bar, barrel drops to almost parallel with the ground. Bat stays level through the zone with his hands staying short and compact (83 mph exit velo), short extension shoulder level. Defensively - stays behind the ball, fields ball a bit-deep and bends at his back, throws from a mid-3/4 slot. Needs to work on getting the glove out in front.Flashed a peak velocity of 74 MPH across the diamond. Pitching - Good tempo in his delivery, high knee-lift. Longer back arm-action, front side opens up a touch early, good long stride, throws from a clean 3/4 slot. Fastball topped 76 MPH with some signs of hand-speed. Curveball at 55 with gradual 11/5 shape. Changeup has downward action at 66.
