NY Games (June 25-27, 2017)

Sturdy 6-foot, 200-pound catcher, ran a 7.8/60. Offensively - effective load and appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 88 MPH; repeatable motion, evidence of lower body engagement, developing counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add to power. Defensively - stays low through the receiving process, smooth transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm with a velocity of 76 MPH and POP time of 1.95-2.07.

WNY Travel Workout (January 16, 2017)

Mullen is a 6-foot, 200 pound catcher in the class of 2018. Recorded a time of 4.65 seconds from home to first base. Offensively- Starts with a wide base and open stance. Knees are bent with weight leaned over back leg. Hands are aligned close to back ear. Toe tap stride back and forward that lands at even. Weight shifts forward throughout swing. Attacks the ball with a flat swing. Strong extension through contact. Swing is flat with a high finish. Had an exit velocity of 82 MPH off the tee, but has previously been as high as 84 MPH. Defensively- Sets up high in crouch with body turned towards 1B. Feet shuffle towards target to generate power for throws. Smooth glove to hand transfer with ball. Short throwing motion that is good for catcher. Lowered pop time from previous best of 2.17 to 2.00 seconds. Also increased arm strength to 72 MPH.

WNY Prospect Preview (July 5, 2016)
Samuel is a 6-foot, 185 pound C/3B. He ran a 4.63 home to 1B, but has ran as fast a 4.59. Offensively-  Samuel starts in an upright stance; feet slightly outside of shoulders; hands just above his shoulders; bat at a 45 degree angle. He uses and exaggerated load, and an aggressive leg kick; mostly an upper body effort. Exit velocity of 84 MPH (+16 MPH from Dec. 2015). Additional lower half effort will increase that number and help him reach his power potential. He produced mostly groundball/line-drive results with some length in the swing. Defensively- Samuel sets up behind the plate in a balanced position with his lower half slightly turned towards the 1B side. He received the ball in good position and framed the ball well. Arm strength of 70 MPH with a pop time of 2.21. Demonstrated quick feet during his pop; inconsistent transfer effected arm speed and overall pop time as his rhythm was broken on a few throws.
WNY Pro Holiday Clinic (December 19, 2015)
2018 Catcher stands 5-foot-11, 180-pounds. Offensively- At the plate he starts tall and slightly backside with high hands.  He uses a modified leg kick and slight weight transfer before launch.  Though his exit speed was only 68 mph, with some mechanical tweaks such as a shorter path to the ball and more explosiveness in the legs that should increase quickly. Defensively-Behind the plate Mullen sets up with a relaxed, wide base; 2.17 pop time  He reaches his glove out early instead of letting the ball travel which slowed him down on his throws.  As only a 2018 with a good frame, there’s a lot of room for growth.  With some mechanical work both at the plate and behind, Mullen should see a lot of gains and be fun to watch progress over the next year.
