6/6/18
A righty swinger that starts in a balanced stance. Uses a leg kick for timing while showing a slight back load with hands. A strong kid that can generate regular backspin when he works inside the baseball. Present barrel jump to either gap. A good athlete behind the dish with some burst out of the crouch. Catch and throw skill aren’t elite but more than capable back there. Looked to have feel to receive in game.

Exit Velocity: 82

2/4/18
5-foot-11, 180 pound catching prospect showed quick actions behind the plate with great footwork getting into a strong throwing position. His received abilities were fine, but he can improve on going out and sticking pitches rather than letting the ball get deeper to him. He posted a 1.97-2.05 pop time along with a 74 mph throwing velocity. Both of those could be improved if he works on exploding through the plate when he throws as he comes straight up out of his stance at times. Offensively Newman showed impressive power recording a 93 mph exit velocity. That power is generated from his quick hands, level swing and good utilization of his lower half. Solid contact was made throughout his round showing good ability to stay through the ball.

1/27/18

A right-handed hitter that starts in an athletic stance. Goes with a leg kick to initiate lower half, while taking hands slightly back to launch. Barrel starts in a vertical position before flattening prior to launch. Finds plane well and creates early bat speed. Showed feel for finding the barrel with present jump off the bat. A line drive type guy who can backspin to the ball to either gap. Behind the dish he has quick feet and average to above average exchange skills. Arm action fits the position. Throws showed carry with above average strength.

1/20/18

A right-handed hitter that starts in an athletic setup. Goes with a leg kick to initiate pre launch movements. Barrel flows through load into a vertical launch positions. Swings with intent on a mostly level plane. Showed well above average natural tools through the zone. Present gap pop with the ability to lift the ball with authority to pull side. In the outfield he uses quick footwork getting to the baseball. Plays through the baseball with adequate ball skills. Looks to be more natural behind the plate but has the athleticism in the arm to develop into a solid defender in the outfield. Behind the dish he shows relatively clean feet with quick exchange skills. Throws showed carry with in/out accuracy. Impressive athlete for the backstop position.
