2/11/18

Smith has made good use of the offseason adding noticeable strength to frame with much improved foot speed. The added strength translated to the box, generating louder contact than we’ve seen from him in past. Can get around the ball at times but showed impressive jump with backspin when he worked the middle of the field. It will be interesting to see how the Buckeye staff takes advantage of Smith’s defensive versatility. Turned in his top performance thus far behind the dish. Pop times have improved and he looked more polished receiving wise in bullpens. In the infield he times feet well, allowing him to maintain rhythm throughout fielding sequence. Ball skills are above average prior to transitioning smoothly into his throws. Skill set can play at third with a more natural fit at second base.

2/12/17
6-foot-0, 185-pound strong, athletic frame. The Ohio State commit burst onto the recruiting scene with a standout summer. Smith is a versatile defender that is more than serviceable behind the plate and up the middle of the infield. A very cerebral player that has often finds himself in the right spot defensively. At the plate he has an aggressive approach and swings with intent. Creates a large amount of energy into contact through an efficient loading sequence and well timed weight shift.

6/6/16
6-foot, 180-pound athletic frame. The righty has a swing full of well timed, fluid movements. Starting tall he uses a leg kick to initiate his loading sequence before a controlled stride forward and a well timed weight shift into contact. Hands stay fluid throughout his load and he is able to create excellent whip through the zone with above average batspeed. Took one of the more impressive batting practices of the day by consistently backspinning line drives into the gaps. Registred an exit velocity of 88 mph and ran a 7.42 60-yard dash. Present catcher skills with potential infield upside. Elite pop times. Release and snap is great. Ideal catcher candidate. Pop times ranged between 1.90 to 1.97 with top velocity of 78 mph from the crouch. Athleticism also transfers to the infield. Looks very comfortable from shortstop. He can field and move around well. He has a great arm with top velocity of 82 mph across the infield.

6/30/15
5-foot-11, 170-pound athletic body frame. From the crouch he makes it look easy, using good footwork to get himself squared up and in line with his throws to second base. He throws with a clean, short arm action coming from a high-¾ slot, using 75 mph velocity to produce pop times between 2.01-2.04. In the infield he uses good footwork to approach ground balls, playing through the baseball. Fields with his hands out in front of his body. He throws with a clean, short arm action coming from a ¾ slot, using 77 mph velocity across the infield. Right-handed hitter starts from a balanced stance and loads with his hands fluidly moving to his back shoulder. He swings with a level bat path through the zone, finishing with a one-handed follow through. Reached a top exit velocity of 75 mph and ran a 4.95 out of the batter’s box to first base. On the mound he throws with regular effort to his delivery and lands in a straight line at foot strike. He throws using average arm speed, coming from a ¾ slot. His fastball was between 79-81 mph. His curveball has gradual break to it, with 11/5 tilt at 68-71 mph. He flashed a changeup using fastball arm speed at 67 mph.

7/29/14
5-foot-10, 160 pound athletic body frame.  From the crouch he has good footwork getting in line with his throw.  He throws from a ¾ slot and release by his ear.  Right-handed hitter with a quiet approach and a flat swing that stays in the zone.  He has a one handed high finish with his swing. His top exit velocity was at 71 mph and was 4.72 home to first.
