6/13/17 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-hander sat 84-85 from a compact, high 3/4 delivery working on short rest. Also displayed a 74 mph curveball with 11/5 shape and a 75 mph changeup with good arm speed. Worked two innings with two strikeouts and induced four ground ball outs. Long frame has room for additional weight. Far from maximum effort delivery allows for solid command and the potential for additional velocity spikes. Odell committed on June 19, six days after his outing in this event, to Hofstra.
2/12/17 Righty showcased a quick arm and a fastball that sat 84-86. Standing 6-foot-1, 170-pounds, Odell has a long, lean pitcher’s frame that should be adding more weight and muscle in the near future. His motion was smooth and compact, and he repeated his high 3/4 slot well. Odell’s stride was noticeably long, and at times it looked like he had to try and shorten it so that he would not go off the mound. Throwing slightly against his body, the ball had a bit of a jump to it when approaching the mitt. Though at first he struggled to find a release point for his curveball (70-72), he did manage to throw one good one that showed sharp break, and may even have a chance to be a swing and miss pitch in the future. A similar case can be made for his changeup (74-76), which he spiked a few, but threw one that showed some sink and was above average. Overall, Odell is still working on polishing his arsenal, but the arm strength is there, and there are tools to work with.
NY Games (June 27-29, 2016)
Odell has a lean build; 6-foot-1, 170 pounds. He Catches, pitches from the right side, runs a 7.72 60. Offensively- Upright and open stance. Hands at ear height off the back shoulder. Long toe-touch stride. Hands don’t separate much, but gets good back side drive and lift. Would like to see Odell get stronger to help increase his 82 MPH exit velocity. Pitching- Drop step to the first base side, leg kick above the belt and brings heel in close to back leg. swings leg around and arm comes through at a low-3/4 slot. Throws across body with a FB that seems to cut and maxes out at 82 MPH (sitting 81-82 MPH). Loopy curve that comes in between 65-66 MPH.
