2/23/13 Porterfield has worked very hard in the offseason improving his defensive techniques. He showed pop times of 2.03-2.10 on throws of 76 mph out of the crouch. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound junior showed significant foot-speed for a catcher with a 4.15 home-to-first time. His best tool is a power stroke that is impressive. Porterfield uses a flat bat path through the hitting zone and excellent hip rotation to generate significant pop in his bat. His 92 mph bat exit velocity was tops among catchers and 2nd best in the entire event.
9/25/12 Porterfield had a strong showing in the showcase portion of the event. His 87mph bat exit speed and 78mph throws from the crouch as a catcher were among the top velos on the weekend. The member of Team Pennsylvania at the Under Armour Midwest Future Games in August, had an RBI in the Black Team's first game on Saturday, but saved his best for Sunday. In the final game of the weekend Porterfield put on a show. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound right handed hitter went 5-for-5, with a double, 2 RBI and a tape measure homerun to left field. Porterfield was named the MVP of the Black Team for his efforts.
1/26/13 Porterfield had one of the best days of all position players at the event. Porterfield had the top bat exit velocity of the day at 96 mph, was tied for the best infield arm of the day at 84 mph across the infield and showcased pop times of 2.09-2.15 on throws of 77 mph from behind the plate. Porterfield used his top exit velocity to repeatedly drive baseballs during a very solid round of batting practice. Porterfield has a very basic swing with few parts to it. He is a hitter that should be able to replicate his swing for extended periods of time without going into prolonged slumps. At 5-foot-11, 200-pounds he has the size to be a middle of the order run producer at the next level.
