A 3 time 5A All-State catcher, he will be looking to do what only a handful of others have done in state history as a senior in accomplishing the feat every year of his HS career. A raw athlete that needs work behind the dish in his footwork, receiving and arm strength, but the base ingredients are there to turn into a quality college catcher at the next level. An offensive minded catcher with long lean levers and a taller build than most catchers, yet the size and physical projection leaves you wondering how good this kid can be once he blossoms in the finer points of the game. The bat has always played and played quickly the minute he entered HS. Johnson has shown the ability to drive the baseball, provide extra base hits and drive in runs from the 3 hole in the Cedar Valley lineup. Keep an eye on this kid, as he would be a solid JC/Quality D2 offensive catcher with the base to improve defensively.

Ethan is a young 15 yr old w/a long lean athletic build with plenty of room to add size, strength and weight in the next 2-3 years as he progresses thru HS. Not a runner at this point and as a catcher that’s to be expected. Defensively he showed some quick feet and a clean exchange in his throws to 2B. A 2.1-2.2 pop time that will get better with time as the arm strength comes along. The feet and glove are where they need to be for his age, yet with a good long toss program and maturing physically the arm will allow for increased pop times. There is a hump now with his throws, yet as he gains added strength, the throws will carry on line and straight. Offensively he shows a rock to his hands in getting the hands/knob turned into his load at the launch position. He takes a short inside the baseball approach right now and as he he gets stronger he can utilize his legs and core more efficiently. Right now he gets the barrel in and out of the zone, leaving little room for error to increase his coverage of the zone. Would like to see him get a good strength program to develop further and want to see more of him this fall. Makings are there.
