VA/DC Scout Blog

Maggi is a Gardner-Webb commit. He is listed at 5-foot-11 and it is a compact athletic frame. The delivery builds up pace and intent, starting off slow and has some effort late. The arm swing is short and quick from a low three-quarter slot with arm speed through release. The fastball was 88-90 mph early and stayed 87-90 mph throughout his five innings of work, only allowing one unearned run. With the level of effort involved, I was intrigued to see if the velocity would hold and it did. The fastball had big time arm side run, especially when working to the glove side. Spin rate stayed between 2315-2427 throughout his five innings of work. The breaking ball had hard 12/6 shape with average feel for the zone and was more of a finisher, as opposed to a get ahead breaking ball. The curveball stated between 73-75 mph and is something that he will have to work on being more consistent with, especially at the next level, but it does flash nice shape and depth.
