This was our first look at Newell since the summer where he committed to James Madison University. Newell struggled with control in this outing, not getting out of the first inning. High three-quarter arm slot with some downhill plane to the fastball. The fastball sat at 84-85 mph during this outing and showed average feel for a 12/6 curveball that was 70-72 mph. Struck out the leadoff batter with back to back breaking balls. After that allowed an infield single, a double to Fitzwater, and multiple walks before handing it over to Loper.

Newell is 6-2 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back to a wrap. Hips rotate with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, uphill line drive swing path, showed primarily a pull approach with some carry, exit velocity was 88. In the outfield, gets behind the ball and fields to his side and through it with soft hands, clean exchange, throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 85. Ran a 7.17 60 yard dash. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short loose quick arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are downhill and closed, lands closed with a fall-off finish. Fastball was 81-85 with downward angle and a bit of late run to armside. Curveball had good armspeed and was 69-73 with sharp 11-5 break.
