Haines got the start for the Saints and did not disappoint. The Saints are down a few arms right now, but Haines picked up where Coble left off last week. He did a very good job of mixing his pitches and keeping hitters off balance. In the first the fastball was 83-86 mph with mostly 84-85. In the 4th inning he stayed in the 81-84 range so he held his velo fairly well for being an early season start. The breaking ball had tight short action and stayed 73-76 mph with 11/5 shape. Also featured a 73-75 mph changeup that he used effectively versus a lineup of all right handed hitters. Overall the Mt. St. Mary's commit was impressive for what may have been his first varsity start ever on the mound, especially versus a deep Miller School lineup.
2/16/19
Preseason All-State II
Haines is 6-2 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open athletic stance, short stride on line, short smooth load back, hips rotate completely with violence, has some balance during his swing. Keeps hands inside ball, short and quick to ball with good extension through it, fast bat, strong contact point, level line drive swing that generates carry in the gaps, has doubles power already chance for more as he gets stronger, exit velocity was 83. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields with above average hands. Works through ball, quick clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, loose quick arm action, position velocity was 84. Ran a 4.27 home to first.
