VA/DC Scout Blog

There were a lot of eyes on Huesman Saturday, as this is one of the first times he has thrown for scouts in 2022. The Coastal Carolina commit and draft prospect flashed some of his high end stuff in his two innings of work. In the first inning he sat 93-94 mph and touched 95 mph. Spin generally ranged in the 2300-2450 RPM range, and with his lower slot, the fastball has riding life through the zone. With runners on base he was in the 90-91 mph range. Huesman's slider was the go to pitch, as he showed the confidence to throw it in any count. The slider sat 76-79 mph and ranged in the 2500-2650 RPM range, getting up to 2666 RPM once. The slider varied in shapes at times, but was best when he was getting more sweep to it. He also flashed one changeup at 81 mph. Even though it was only one changeup in warmups and one in game, he did show a little better feel for it than he showed in the handful of times that I saw it last year. In the second the fastball sat 89-91 mph and touched 92-93 mph. The slider was really tough on left handers and resulted in some uncomfortable at bats when he was able to produce more horizontal break on it. It was a good first look at Huesman and we will certainly get a few more looks in this spring.

Huesman is listed at 5-foot-11, I would say that is pretty close and he may have inched up to the 6-foot mark. Athletic body and uber competitive arm on the mound. Two-sport star and starting quarterback for Hanover. I have seen Huesman a fair number of times and he has been good every time, but this was a different level on Tuesday night. He was locked in from his first pitch to his last. Arguably the best arm I have seen this year. Athletic mover on the mound, works exclusively from the stretch, and repeats the delivery really well. Starts off closed and lands slightly closed at stride. Hips and shoulders have uphill tilt, engages backside early, and finishes towards the plate. Arm action is short and quick from a low three-quarter arm slot. The fastball stayed 90-92 mph in the first and the second through the fifth innings was mostly 88-91 with some occasional 92's. Above average spin on a fastball that he locates with command down in the zone, especially to the arm side. As he pitched into the sixth and seventh the fastball command and velo did fade a little bit, all three walks came in his last two innings. Two walks were five pitches or less and one was in a 3-2 count. The fastball velo had dropped to the 85-88 range and touched one 90 late. The slider is a legitimate pitch that is next level ready now. It was 76-78 mph early with command to the arm side. When he got it to the glove side (middle inner half to right handers) it showed more depth and got plenty of swings and misses down. The slider velo and command faded, like the fastball, in his final two innings to the 73-76 range. Showed a few changeups at 82-83 mph with average feel and is clearly his third best pitch. Long term he will need to show the changeup a bit more to continue with the starter profile, but right now Huesman has two college ready pitches and at the high school level he will dominate with those two and does not need to show a third very much. This is a legitimate draft potential arm next year that should be a high follow for scouts after the draft in July.

Huesman has a lanky athletic frame with room to add strength. The Coastal Carolina commit came on to get the save in the top of the seventh last night and made quick work of the Mechanicsville hitters. Struck out the side in fourteen pitches and uses mainly fastballs to do so. The first two hitters Huesman faced saw 90-92 mph heaters before settling into 88-90 for the third hitter. Flashed one slider that had late 1/7 bite at 74 mph. Work with intent, but is under control throughout the delivery. Low three-quarter arm slot with a quick arm through release. Huesman continues to make strides on the mound and is primed for a big spring.

3/07/20

Athletic left handed arm. Body moves quickly down the mound and works with some pace. Quick short arm action from a low three-quarter arm slot. Fastball was 82-85 mph and had some arm side run at times. Slider was 72-74 mph and had two different shapes. Occasionally had a slurve look with 2/8 shape and flashed a harder tighter slider with 1/7 shape, but showed ability to get both over for strikes.

Preseason All-State II

Huesman is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, short arm action that is quick, some effort to his delivery. Shoulders are level and closed, lands on line with a fall off finish with recoil. Fastball was 84-86, with a tough angle some late sink to it. Slider had good armspeed and hard sharp 2/8 break at 68-74. Change-up had good armspeed and was 73-76 with sink to it.
