LHP Williard Peterson (Evansville, 2022) showed some impressive stuff on the mound during the game. Peterson has an intimidating presence on the mound standing at 6-foot-3, 220-pounds. He has a long, loose arm action with a low ¾ arm slot. Peterson’s fastball sat 84-86 with cutting action to it and a 2,400 RPM average. His curveball had 1/7 break which sat 68-70 mph and averaged 2,592 RPM.
Peterson was one of the stand-outs at the West Milwaukee I.D. almost exactly a month ago, and he reasserted himself as one of the top uncommitted left-handers in the state after this performance. A durable/powerful 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, Peterson has an eccentric mix, as he cuts both his fastball and changeup, spotting both well in and around the zone. He added a tick to his fastball high in between looks, reaching an 88 mph max on Sunday. Peterson also showcased what was, very possibly, the best breaking ball in attendance – a 2/8 curve that averages a spin rate of 2,650 rpm, with sharp action and the feel to land it for strikes. Peterson’s profile is unique enough to be a tough at-bat on its own, and his pitch metrics only add to his upside, as he’s still uncommitted.
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 6-foot-3, 240-pounds. Physical, broad-shouldered build.
Delivery: Rhythmic drop/drive type delivery, stacks into back leg before uncoiling downhill, shoulders stay closed until front footstrike. Works in line to target, occasionally falls towards third base side, athletic finish through release.
Arm Action: LH. Long and loose arm action, 3/4 release.
FB: T87, 84-85 mph. Comes out from a lower release angle (5 ft. average) and works around to cut it. Above-average spin characteristics and efficiency. T2446, 2376 average rpm.
CB: 69-70 mph. Raw feel to spin, averaged 2,500+ RPM. 2/8 shape, gradual action; still fully harnessing it. T2652, 2522 average rpm.
CH: 72-74 mph. Unique spin-profile on changeup. Wrists work around to cut it; T2335 rpm, averaged 2205.
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 6-foot-2, 225-pounds. Strong, wide-shouldered build.
Delivery: Smooth rhythm throughout delivery, athletic front side, front toe lands closed, stays on line with target, falls towards third base side.
Arm Action: LH. Long and loose arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T82, 78-80 mph. Works with natural cut action.
CB: 67-70 mph. 2/8 shape with sweeping action. Feel for pitch.
CH: 69-70 mph. Thrown with near fastball arm speed. Flashed sink.
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 6-foot-2, 225-pounds. Sturdy, durable frame.
Delivery: Works from right side of the rubber; squared, wide base. Back step into high knee, shoulders level, lands closed.
Arm Action: LH. Long arm swing, loose action from a 3/4 slot.
FB: T82, 78-82 mph. Produces natural cut action.
CB: 66-69 mph. 2/8 shape with tight spin, above-average action.
CH: 70-74 mph. Mostly maintains arm speed; action varies from similar natural cut to fade.
+ LHP Willard Peterson (Evansville HS, WI) showed next-level attributes while on the bump today. Peterson, the big left-hander repeats his simple and fluid motion, helping him pound the strike zone. In a quick first inning of work, he punched out a couple batters and picked another off after a soft infield single. Peterson showed real feel for his 2/8 breaking ball that he backdoor’d a couple times for strikes, too.
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 6-foot-2, 210-pounds. Large durable build.
Delivery: Delivery works slightly across body, level shoulders closed front side, in rhythm.
Arm Action: LH. Long loose arm action, high 3/4 slot, low effort.
FB: T77, 74-76 mph. Natural cut action, also showed sink at times.
CB: 64-65 mph. 1/7 shape, slurve type.
SL: 68-69 mph. Similar shape to curveball, firmer with some depth.
Large frame and build, 6-foot-2, 210-pound left-handed pitcher. Repeatable delivery, gets rotational at times and will finish to third base side. Arm is loose and easy, works out of high ¾ slot. Fastball showed natural cut action, played 77-79 mph. Flashes slurve type breaking ball at 65 mph. Follow left-handed arm in the class.
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 6-foot-2, 210-pounds. Large build.
Delivery: Tall and fall, stride foot moves down and around to closed landing, slightly rotational and creates deceptive angle. Easy effort.
Arm Action: LH. 3/4 slot, long loose action, clean and easy.
FB: T81, 77-80 mph. Plays with angle, showed better out of the windup.
CB: 63-69 mph. 2/8 shape, big sweeping action, flashed above average.
CH: 67-71 mph. Near fastball arm action, sinks to arm side
At our PBR Badger State Battle, Peterson hurled three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Peterson’s stuff impressed tremendously; the 6-foot-3, 225-pound southpaw routinely pumped his fastball in at 84-87 mph at 2,300+ RPM and spun several sharp breaking balls in the low-70s that crossed the 2,700+ RPM mark.
