Ryan Ozella
NorCal Area Scout

Northern California - The 2020 season is right around the corner and the 2022 class has a deep group of players who have the tools to impact clubs at the next level. These Sophomores have already gotten a taste of high competition and after big summers are poised to have breakout seasons at the High School level come Spring. All have shown the skills both in games and in showcases and should be a group highly reviewed in season.

NOTES

9/20/19

Fall tournament - Uncommitted; One of the more talented 2022 SS we've seen, Campbell is going to be an offensive force and also possesses talents to be an above average defensive player. Plays the game with confidence and carries himself with body language that can positively affect his teammates. Showed off a strong arm on a play that took him to a deep backhand that can keep him at SS, with the ability to flick a quick snap throw and get good mustard on the ball across the diamond. Range will have to be something he works hard to develop in order to stay up the middle. Otherwise, 3rd base will be an option and there he looks to have the offensive talents to profile at that position. Campbell has hitters hands and is aggressive. He sees the ball well and early and showed the ability to get the barrel to the ball in multiple zones. Now, developing more zone discipline will be important so he's not getting himself out on pitches that are out of the zone. Good top hand finish, he did show a pull-side approach that limited his ability to drive pitches on the outer half. His body is lanky and rangy and there is ample room to fill out.

6/13/19

Summer Scout - Long frame with lean build and athleticism. Showed the athleticism with a jump to take away a hit at 2nd base and showed solid footwork there all day; showed off his arm as well with a quick turn to complete a double play with a loose and compact arm that can stay in the middle of the field. Quick, compact barrel with level swing after knee tuck staying balanced through contact. Game 1 saw him pick up two hits with a double into LCF that was hard off the barrel before another hard contact into RF for a single. Also went two innings on the hill showing running FB (77-82 MPH) and long, deep CB (67-71) with 12/6 shape

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Length in lean medium frame; very projectable young frame with plenty of room in the frame. Controlled effort runner with average stride length (7.62 60-yd dash). Tall stance with slight bend of the knees keeping high back elbow and even hands with flat bat;hands work down as bat lifts with knee tuck. Controlled swing having quick upward path while staying behind the baseball; projectable swing showing growing strength and ability to go gap-to-gap with swing (79 exit velo). Short, controlled feet stay underneath him well and flashes of more range; compact and quick arm with ability to throw from different angles based on position (76 MPH).

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Long, lean, lanky young body type on 5-foot-10 140-pound frame, long-ish arms, looks got be solidly projectable in a physical sense, good delivery, easy fluid lift, compact and smooth backside arm action, strides on-line and maintains balance, overhand slot, good extension, all looks set-up for future velocity and stuff gains, fastball (T81) got firmer as the session went along with velocity on last pitch, held velocity in stretch, occasionally created good fastball angle and run, comes out easy and should steadily gain velocity as he physically matures, big curveball (67-68 mph) thrown with feel in wind-up but lost some feel in stretch, 12/5 type break and flashed quick change of direction, still developing feel of the change-up (72-73 mph). Looks to have a good future on the mound, physical gains obviously will have a lot to do with his development.

NOTES

8/17/19

PBR CA STATE GAMES - Medium full frame with growing strength and some current strength; frame has already made jumps and can continue to shape and tighten for more growth. Two-way skills with strong arm for on the hill or behind the plate. At the dish is quiet with high hands off the back shoulder and slightly opened stance; balanced through contact with upwards path of a quick bat. Showed strength in bat picking up couple hits including long 2B into LCF; strength in frame shows up with ability to drive gaps now. Arm is loose and strong behind the plate with ability to show carry on throws to the bag (2.12-2.20 Pop); caught a guy in game at second on a tough pitch down and away throwing a strike. Arm strength translates to the mound where he went two strong innings striking out five with 1 hit. Hands lift to head with high front leg lift staying firm; really rides the back hip well getting hinge down the hill to produce late, fast arm speed from compact H-3/4 release. FB 83-85 T87 with life at the plate; lots of swings up through the zone. SLD 69-72 cutter like action with sharp actions and firm shape; projects for more bite. CHG 76-77 with arm side run. A top 2022 to follow.

7/28/19

5-foot-7, 145-pounds, medium frame wider chest and physical projection. His fastball had some life, little run and room for improvement. His fastball sat from 79-82 Mph and topped out at 83 MPH. Curveball has loose movement, good spin and effective when controlled can be a strikeout pitch. Curveball sat from 65-67 MPH. He didn’t utilize his changeup much but was 72-73 MPH. Had a very good day going CG striking out 9, walking 2 and giving up three hits. IS a projectable pitcher who is just hitting his stride.

6/26/19

PBR Bay Area Open - Pitching: Had a good day as a infielder but also impressed on the mound. The young Zaldivar has a strong build on a compact 5-foot-7, 145-pound frame. Has a lot of rhythm in his delivery and some creative flair as well. Starts with high hands and works to create coordination between his hands and feet. Good over the rubber, long stride and stays on-line well. Very good balance and body control, particularly given his precocious age. The ball came out easily from a shallow backside arm action (as you'd expect from a catcher) and with those mechanics there are plenty of velocity ticks upward as he ages. Fastball came out well (78-81 mph) and has some angle, the release point looked to also help the fastball play up a bit. Big 12/5 curveball from his overhand slot, flashed enough depth to be able to throw it in the zone. Fading change-up (69-71 mph) was thrown with confident feel and arm speed. Also showed ability to hold stuff and feel utilizing slide step.

6/26/19

Bay Area Open INF: Medium frame with length in the torso and wider chest; projectable build that has space to grow and tighten; fluid stride staying inline. Tall stance with very high hands and high back elbow hinging into back hip as hands pull back with short foot lift; fluid and loose swing with loose wrists having some whip of the barrel on upward path. Bat flashed speed when turning to pull the ball and ability to adjust barrel length to work in the middle of the field showing carry into gaps (80 EV). Short, quick strides in infield showing late glove movements and ability to pick hops out of the dirt; flashed the ability to stay in time and keep the ball on the bag. Arm is strong and loose able to make all the throws from the position looking like a pitcher in the infield (82 MPH). Skills have good fundamentals with some tools that he can keep improving.

NOTES

10/13/19

PBR N CA Top Prospect Game - A major standout performer at the event, tools matched up with plus personality and game knowledge at a young age flashing a high ceiling. Wide sloping shoulders, broad upper body and well-proportioned at 6-foot-0 180-pounds. Slow load allows the direct hands to flash above-average bat speed (87 mph exit velo off tee) creating easy lift to the gaps and flashing pull pop during BP; 3 Quality AB’s drawing a walk and single with a hard line out to deep CF as he was consistently on pitches in the game. Defense was also stellar with advanced transition and strength in the arm (75 mph; 1.93-2.09 Pop). Receiving, blocking and game calling were all on display during the game, consistently working with pitchers in and out of the dugout. Type of personality found on contending type teams.

NOTES

8/17/19

PBR CA STATE GAMES - Long, large frame with width in the shoulders and very lean muscle build; projects to continue to add strength and take big jumps. Showed the tools to be a future D1 RHP on the mound even without his best outing. Went two innings striking out 1, giving up 1 hit and walking 4. The control wasn’t it’s best, but the overall athleticism and ability to have the ball come out of his hand firm and clean were very impressive. Hands lift high with slight turn and coil around firm back leg riding out the back hip well and landing with loose hips on a firm front side; became over-rotational to 1st during the outing. Arm produces late speed with length out of the glove to 3/4 release; loose and easy arm that stays hidden behind his body through delivery. FB 83-86 with run and cut; live FB through the zone showing life up through zone. CB 66-69 with 3/4 slurvy break; late bend with depth occurring at the plate and flashing tight and hard. CHG 72 with arm side run; limited usage but chance to be a solid 3rd pitch. Showed athleticism in the field playing on the left side and showing the ability to stick there. At the plate barrel shows some upwards length with hands dropping down on load; best swings show flatter barrel path with hands being more in time with hips. Overall an athletic 2022 player who has the tools to keep improving and should be a follow.

CCB World Series - Long, tight frame with a high waist and length in the lower half, Moring is very projectable as a player showing tools on the mound and in the field. On the hill, Moring moves fluidly down the hill with a slight back turn and high front knee allowing his loose arm to move quickly to 3/4 release. The FB 80-83 showed late life at the plate and ability to work the bottom half of the zone. The CHG (69-73) was extremely heavy, dying about halfway to home and flashing some run; pitch has a high ceiling. CB 66-67 11/4 with late cutting sweep in it’s depth; another pitch that projects well. Defensively he made plays all weekend at 3B showing the ability to cut angles and the arm to stick on the left side of the infield. His bat is compact with tight hands having some extra pre-swing movement; when he cuts it down he showed he could create hard contact through the middle of the field. Moring is a player I haven’t seen yet and came away very impressed.

NOTES

8/17/19

PBR CA STATE GAMES - Athletically built medium frame with the length projecting added growth. Future shortstop with the current skills available and space to keep growing into full blown tools. Defensive skills show up with strong footwork producing range and the ability to move in time with the baseball; made multiple outstanding plays on the move. Arm fits the left side with quick release and growing strength; ability to get rid of the ball and keep it on the bag. At the plate stays tall slightly opened with high hands; direct barrel with flat path for consistent contact and high-average type of hitter. Projects very well for the next level with more growth as he continues to mature.

6/26/19

PBR Bay Area Open - Pitching: Long and lean body type on his 5-foot-9, 140-pound frame, lanky proportions and good physical projectability, given that he continues to grow taller. Polished delivery, particularly for a rising sophomore. Fluid delivery, consistent rhythm, easy lift and good timing of hand separation relative to getting down the slope. Overhand slot, long stride, consistent foot strike. Does a good job keeping fingers above the ball and creating angle on all his pitches. The arm works smooth and easy and produces the 76-78 mph fastball with minimal effort. Future velocity projection is pretty easy to make.. to what level, that will be determined by size and strength, but the arm action and delivery are in place. Depth of 11/5 curveball (60-65 mph) with big enough shape to dive below bats. Confidence in change-up (66-68 mph) was clear and feel of the pitch matched his confidence. Advanced feel of his three-pitch mix to go with a polished delivery.

6/26/19

BAY AREA OPEN - INFIELD

Long medium frame, lean and compact with projectable build; athletic and smooth getting to full speed quickly (7.88 60yd). Tall, slightly opened stance with high hands; balanced staying behind the baseball with controlled foot lift and hands working slightly back. Compact swing with barrel getting quick turn before slightly upwards path through the zone showing full two hand finish; line drives through the middle with some lift projecting more extra-base hits as he matures and strengthens (76 EV). Glove was solid with the ability to make adjustments out in front as he maintained strong angles through the baseball; range is good with the ability to expand as speed improves. Loose compact arm able to make the throws including deep into the hole; plays well on the run also (81 MPH). Quick release made to be at Shortstop position. Projectable frame with strong base actions that can continue to develop in the middle of the field. 2022 to follow.
