IRVINE, CALIF. - The Inaugural 14U/13U California Select got underway Thursday with some notable teams getting things started in Day One of the event operated by PBR Tournaments. On Friday all teams were on the fields giving us the true tournament feel that we’ve become accustomed to in the summer.

After getting a glimpse of many of the Day One standouts, Friday presented an opportunity to confirm if what we saw on Thursday was what we thought or not. Friday also presented some fresh teams playing for the first time in the tournament giving us first looks at a new batch of players.

With a sufficient mix of players throughout the event to keep us busy, let’s dive into some notable standouts from Friday’s action at the California Select.

2025 RHP Chrissan Gerfers - SoCal Bombers

Gerfers stands out physically on the mound as a tall, lean and long limbed righty all of which helps with deception. He presented an above average (for age group) three pitch arsenal - FB/SL/CH - all of which he was landing for strikes both swinging and missing.

2026 3B/RHP Cole Munyon - 365 Shockers Elite

Had a huge day at the plate and showed flashes on the mound. Hit two deep balls for doubles, one to the pull side and one the other way. Gets the foot down and explodes the lower half into his swing with natural lag through the zone. Struck out four in four innings pitched showing flashes with two pitches. Also played third where he was instinctive and showed adequate footwork with a strong arm.

2025 SS Matthew Witkow - Legacy Baseball Group

Registered another pair of hits to the pull side with a compact stroke that he’s able to manipulate through the zone getting barrel on the ball. Instinctive defender that plays light on his feet while showing fair arm strength across the diamond.

2025 OF Grady Fischer - Canes

Had a very productive day at the plate for the Canes OC team going 2-3 with a double and two RBI. Shows a compact but powerful stroke at the plate. His first two AB’s (double/fly out) were both deep to the pull side into the wind. In the video below he again shows the strength along with the ability to get a barrel on it resulting in his second base hit.

2025 SS Gavin Hottle - Next Level Baseball

Continued to show a simple power stroke at the plate with above average (for age group) defensive work. Arm plays showing the ability to make throws from a number of angles. However, it’s the present easy power now that should only continue to come for him as he enters and matriculates through high school.

2025 Wyatt Hanoian - Saddleback Cowboys

Showing some of the best shortstop instincts and actions we’ve seen in a tournament filled with very good shortstops. Moves very well to both sides and has the type of hands that will keep him at shortstop as he gets into/through high school. At the plate he consistently gets the barrel on the ball while showing the ability to pull or go the other way. Hyper focused during at-bats.

2026 SS Hamza Hatahet - BPA

Showed some flashy tools at shortstop where his range was put to the test on a fly ball to shallow left-center that he handled with ease. Then showed the hands with a turn of a double play and a feed on a double play. Was 2-2 with two RBI and a walk. His two hits were a standup triple and standup double.

2025 RHP Alex Stern - Legacy Baseball Group

Showed the ability to attack hitters striking out 7-of-8 batters faced in his 2.2 innings pitched. Worked all quadrants of the zone inducing whiffs and weak contact.

2025 1B/RHP John Petrie II - Canes

Stayed hot with a deep double to right center field that he would later score on. When he’s on time there’s plenty of power in the stroke as evidenced by his hard line out to right field that would’ve been extra bases were it not for the positioning of the right fielder. Lots to like here without seeing him on the mound yet.
