The CIF-SS Division I baseball championship has often been described as the most difficult tournament to win in high school sports and after winning it all in 2022, JSerra was on the precipice of returning to the championship game for a third straight season. In a massive semifinal game on the road, Trent Caraway delivered arguably his biggest offensive performance. A triple shy of the cycle, Caraway did the unfathomable and laid down a perfect bunt for a single showing off his speed (sub 4.0) and making scouts do double and triple checks on their own stopwatches. It was the best player on the best team doing what those guys usually do, deliver in big situations.
There are numerous stories like that of Caraway, who is widely considered a high enough round draft pick that he will have to choose between professional baseball and the splendors of major college baseball. A four year Trinity League player, Caraway transferred in to JSerra from Santa Margarita to start his junior season. The Lions were loaded coming off a CIF-SS DI run to the championship game and there was already a bevy of shortstops on the roster. Yet while some wondered where Caraway fit in defensively, no one ever questioned his hitting prowess.
In 2023 Caraway led JSerra in eight offensive categories including hits (49), which broke the record of 46 set by 2017 first overall pick in the MLB Draft, Royce Lewis. Amongst all the chatter of top draft prospects in this class from California, Caraway has been amongst the most consistent throughout the entire season.
In the best high school baseball league this country has to offer, Caraway proved himself a hitter and a versatile defender for the Lions the last two seasons and no doubt is on the same type trajectory as his now fellow JSerra alum. With a commitment to Oregon State in hand, we know we’ll all have a chance to continue to watch Caraway’s baseball story unfold.
This chapter, however, ends with Trent Caraway being named the 2023 Prep Baseball Report California State player of the Year.
