Draft Spotlight: LHP Basilio Pacheco

One of the fastest risers on MLB Draft boards from SoCal is left-handed pitcher Basilio Pacheco from Segerstrom High School (Santa Ana, CA). The Long Beach State signee has continued to impress with each outing including his most recent performance in the first round of the playoffs.

Pacheco features a three-pitch mix with feel for a developing fourth pitch which is currently above average for his level. His two-seam fastball makes his four-seamer play up because of his ability to locate both pitches. His sweeping curveball comes from the same ¾ slot and with the same arm speed usually resulting in weak contact. His changeup is a work in progress but is currently effective.

On May 17th Pacheco toed the rubber and collected the win Vs. Santa Ynez HS (Santa Barbara, Ca.) in front of over a half-dozen pro scouts in the first round of the CIF SS Division IV playoffs. Pacheco proved to be too much, posting 9 strikeouts, giving up 2 hits, and one run in 6.0 innings of work.

Pacheco's cutting FB was dominant today sitting 85-88, touching 91. He tallied 110 pitches with a 63% strike ratio. At the plate, Pacheco went 1 for 3 with 2RBI, and 2 runs scored. The Jaguars and Pacheco take on Northview HS (West Covina, Ca.) in the second round next week.
