Game Notes (CA): Clayton Valley at #16 Acalanes
May 9, 2019
LAFAYETTE, CA - The Diablo-Foothill League title was on the line on Tuesday May 7 as Clayton Valley traveled to take on the 16th ranked Acalanes Dons (21-2, 10-0). The Ugly Eagles (17-6, 8-3) were two games back with two to play and if they could sweep Acalanes in their last two games they could have ended up atop the standings. However, on a windy day, the Dons took the contest by a score of 5-2, behind strong pitching from 2020 LHP Logan Hurd and stellar relief from 2019 RHP Eddie Burns. 2020 RHP Joey Soberon was on the mound for CV and threw a gutty outing, but ultimately Acalanes executed better on offense when it counted. With the win, Acalanes clinched the league title. They will likely enter the NCS playoffs as a #1 or #2 seed and I'd expect Clayton Valley to also get a playoff bid.
It was a game of small ball, as all of the early scoring came via productive outs. In a game with as many offensive standouts as this one had, it was good to see young players understanding how to 'play the game' and execute what was needed in various situations. 2020 3B Nick Kresnak of Acalanes drove in two runs, one with a 4-3 and the other with a line drive through the middle. 2020 OF Sam Heyman drove in a run with a 5-3 out and the decisive third run was driven in by 2020 CF Nicolas Bamont on one of the hard hit balls that actually found some grass in the outfield. The wind was howling in and numerous well-hit balls just died in the gloves of both team's outfielders.
D1 commits were all over the field in this one; Acalanes: Kresnak (Washington), Logan Hurd (LMU), 2021 C Thatcher Hurd (UC Santa Barbara), Eddie Burns (USF); Clayton Valley: Joey Soberon (St. Mary's), 2020 1B Ryan Pierce (St. Mary's). Not included in these committed players is one of the nation's top 2021 players, Acalanes SS Davis Diaz, who is holding numerous offers and taking his time in making a decision. Here is a highlight clip of some of those players (Diaz, Kresnak, Pierce)... Inside are reports/notes on 12 players, including those committed and uncommitted.
