CARLSBAD, CA. - Opening day at La Costa Canyon featured ’19 LHP/1B Spencer Jones, the number one rated player in the Prep Baseball Report California Class of 2019 Rankings.

The La Costa Canyon Mavericks defeated the Granite Hills Eagles 3-1 in game one of the season for both teams. The Mavericks allowed only 1 hit and 1 run behind the combined pitching performance of Spencer Jones and ’19 RHP Bretten Hadley.

Making his first start of the year and first game appearance on the mound since this past summer, Spencer Jones created a buzz among scouts and fans alike in his highly anticipated first start. Jones walked out to 2Pac’s “All Eyez on Me” and he wasn’t kidding, as every MLB team had at least one scout in attendance. Every pitch was highly scrutinized, well documented and discussed amongst the crowd. It was easy to tell which teams are interested in him as a pitcher only as half the scouting crowd departed once he hit his pitch count of 60 pitches. Being a two-way prospect shifted the focus of the remaining scouts as they repositioned themselves along the third base line to video and dissect his at bats.
