LA Open: Corner Infield Analysis

Les Lukach
State Scouting Director

The Inaugural Los Angeles Showcase took place at Maverick Field in West Covina, California and was open to players in all classes. The event attracted over 50 players. The participants were put through a pro-style workout that saw them run the 60 yard dash, batting practice, and a defensive workout before the pitchers took the stage to throw their bullpens and close out the event.

As part of our continuing coverage of the event we will continue to break down all the data, roll out stats, content, and videos from the event, but first here are some quick hits from what we saw at Maverick Field.

In this edition we'll take a look at corner infielders.

NOTE: Be sure to click on players profile to view their video from the event.

Scouting Report

Six-foot-2, 250-pounds, large frame with strength throughout the body particularly in the lower half that he uses to generate his easy power at the plate. Starts with a neutral setup with high hands that he keeps close to the chest throughout the swing. Hands are fast allowing him to catch up to pitches when necessary. Is short to the ball while getting extended post contact. Has big present power in the bat. Maintains balance throughout swing and has the ability to drive balls to all fields. Defensively he shows average footwork with fair range that could play at third base. His fast hands at the plate carry over to his defense where his exchanges are quick and clean. Arm strength is average presently with accurate throws.

Scouting Report

Five-foot-9, 165-pounds, medium/large frame with proportional strength throughout the body. Brown showed a loud round of BP where he elevated everything with consistent barrel contact. Generates his power with a strong lower half that works well with his upper half. Aggressively attacks balls from a wide, left leg way back stance. Big leg kick trigger before driving off the bag leg through the ball. Maintains his barrel on an uphill path through the zone and into contact resulting in line drives to all fields. Defensively he profiles as a third baseman presently with sufficient arm strength and accuracy to stay there in the future. Plays through balls while under control of his body. Shows fair range to either side along with soft hands. Arm can get a tick long in the back but it’s strong and accurate from a few angles.

Scouting Report

Five-foot-10, 175-pounds, medium frame with strength in the lower half, squared shoulders with strength down to the wrists.  Echevarria came ready to get after it and it shows itself when you discuss early standouts. Echevarria had a very loud round of BP where he barreled balls to the gaps throughout the round. Shows present bat speed and uses his proportional strength very well. Gets his barrel on plane and its keeps it in the zone a long time. Defensively he showed to have enough arm strength and accuracy to stay at third base. Showed average range with good lateral movements and quickness. Throws were accurate across the diamond. On the mound Echevarria showed a loose, compact, quick arm through to a high-¾ slot with regular effort. Fastball shows sharp, downer cutting action presently. Seemed as though the more it cut the more his command wavered, but the pitch was nasty. Curveball shows sharp, sweeping movement. He also shows some fee for the changeup that flashes fading action. There’s some deception to his delivery as he starts closed and uses a short back turn to hide the ball.

Scouting Report

Five-foot-11, 145-pounds, medium frame that is long, lean, and wiry strong. High waisted with long limbs. Mas showed well in all facets throughout the day. At the plate he shows a short-to-the ball attack where he uses his quick hands to whip the barrel through the zone with a middle-middle approach. Uses a balanced setup with a smooth load and short stride. Does a fair job of using his lower half in the swing. Defensively he shows feel for playing on the dirt with athletic actions and excellent body control. Arm strength is average presently with accuracy. Arm is loose. Hands are soft and footwork is fluid. Plays through balls with clean exchanges. On the mound Mas flashes some deception with a shoulder turn and high leg kick before coming from a high-¾ slot. Shows feel for secondary pitches - changeup and curveball. Fastball shows late action as it gets to the plate. Rhythm is smooth with minimal effort.

Scouting Report

Six-foot-3, 200-pounds, large, strong frame with squared shoulders, long limbs, and large feet. Cho is a physical third baseman that put on quite the display during his round of BP. Cho possesses present strength in the lower half that he uses very well in his swing to generate present power - generate a 90 mph exit velocity off a tee. Starts even-to-slightly-open before significant back load shifts all his weight before a short stride drives his  explosive hands and barrel through the ball. Shows present bat speed from a high hands setup with pull side power and a middle approach. Hit a homerun during his round of BP. Defensively Cho showed quick, sure hands with quick, clean transfers and enough arm to handle the left side of the infield. Throws showed carry and accuracy across the diamond. His footwork was fluid and he played through the ball. Can handle the backhand as well as the throw on the run. His quickness may be better suited for third base where his hands and instincts would play up.

Six-foot, 140-pounds, medium frame that is long, lean, and wiry strong. Long limbs with squared shoulders. Starts with a balanced setup with hands back before dropping them into launch position. Has strength through the shoulders into the arms that helps him drive balls - prefers the pull side. Does a fair job of incorporating the lower half into his swing. Power should continue to come with added strength/mass to his frame. Maintains barrel on a consistent plane throughout the swing. Defensively he shows athletic actions with fluid footwork around the bag at first. Arm is strong and accurate across the diamond.

Scouting Report

Six-foot-1, 195-pounds, large frame with proportional strength throughout the body. Sloped shoulders with strength into the forearms. Long limbs with large feet. At the plate Barrios stands tall and upright with a narrow base before using leg lift trigger to initiate swing. Could incorporate lower half into swing more as he presently is rotational rather than driving into the ball. Keeps hands close to body before getting extended after contact. Has fair bat speed. Maintains barrel on plane throughout the swing. Has a middle-middle approach with some pull side power. Defensively Barrios shows fluid footwork with athletic actions around the bag at first. Hands are soft and true while his exchanges are clean and quick. Has plenty of arm for the position as all throws were accurate to the bags he was throwing too. Backhand is true. Charges balls with excellent body control.
