NorCal Player of the Week: RHP Sean Flowers

2019 RHP Sean Flowers (Cardinal Newman HS-Santa Rosa, CA) has been named this week’s Prep Baseball Report Northern California Player of the Week due to his standout performance on 3/26/18 vs Oak Ridge HS in the first game of the Boras Classic Northern California.

In one of two 10:00 games on Day 1 of the Boras Classic, Flowers took the mound versus a formidable Oak Ridge HS team and their own outstanding 2020 right-hander, Nathan Hanse. It was a cool morning and it seemed as though offense would definitely be at a premium with two quality pitchers on the mound.  The atmosphere was play-off like and as each scoreless inning went up on the scoreboard, every pitch was a make or break moment. 

Flowers (uncommitted) was up to the task. He went the distance to get the win in a 1-0 shutout. He recorded 10 strikeouts, allowed four hits (all singles), and walked three Oak Ridge batters. He masterfully mixed his fastball (84-87 mph) and liberally used both the curveball and slider to keep the ORHS off balance. Particularly impressive was Flowers' ability to change the shape of the breaking ball, as it was generally the same speed (73-77 mph) but the different action on it and the locations to which he threw it made it very effective. He thre 98 pitches, 62 for strikes, including starting 19 of 28 batters with a first pitch strike.

The game ended with runners on first and second and Oak Ridge mounting a rally, with a hit and a walk and Flowers no doubt tiring on the mound. He was able to throw one more good breaking ball, coaxing a hard ground ball up the third base line that his teammate, Dylan Tarnutzer dove for, knocked down, then scrambled on his knees to slap his glove on the bag JUST ahead of the sliding runner. It was quite a moment and a great way to kick off a great week of baseball in Sacramento.

For his efforts, Flowers has been named the Prep Baseball Report NorCal Player of the Week for the week of Marh 26-April 1. Here is a link to the box score from the game.
