NorCal State Games ID: Quick Hits

PBR CA Scouting Staff

LATHROP, CALIF. - The NorCal State Games ID showcase took place on 6/16/22 and hosted several talented players from all classes in the one-day showcase. Players were put through a traditional pro style workout that included a laser timed 60 yard dash, a round of batting practice, and a traditional defensive workout.

The event annually attracts plenty of talent as players look to earn an invitation to the prestigious California State Games that will be held at the end of July at Hart Park in Orange. With many talented players on hand in this edition of Quick Hits we’ll highlight some of the early standouts.

For full data metrics and video (not yet edited and posted), please be sure to click into each player's profile.

We've previously gotten into some of the top performers in multiple categories as we review notes/data, here we present the standouts in this edition of Quick Hits, listed alphabetically.

  • High School: Whitney
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: The Rock Baseball Club
  • Height: 5-10

  • Bat/Throw: R/R
Taken as a collective whole, the stats, both traditional and more advanced, illuminate a player who is not only talented, but also played a big role in the success of his high school team, which won a section title in 2022. The arm is strong and accurate, the BP round showed not only good bat speed and EV, but also passed the eye test as he pounded ball after ball in the middle of the field, many to straightaway centerfield. The arm showed at both spots, though better (relative to the position) at 3rd base. The bat speed is well above average.

Carson Cleage

Class of 2023 / OF

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2023
  • Primary Position: OF
    Secondary Position: SS
  • High School: Menlo
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: NorCal
  • Height: 6-0
    Weight: 185lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R
One of the two most 'toolsy' players in attendance, the 60 was quick and the infield velocity showed well, indicating some innate twitchiness that will continue to blossom. The body is noticeable right away, proportional and athletic. The bat talent is there to match the physical athleticism, with mid-90s EVs, outstanding rotational acceleration numbers, indicating his ability to quickly get the barrel into the zone, and a lot of sweet spot contact. Also possesses both above average hand speed and bat speed.

Marcus Maeder

Class of 2023 / RHP

  • Graduating Class: 2023
  • Primary Position: RHP
    Secondary Position: OF
  • High School: Colfax
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: CBA SSC North
  • Height: 6-3
    Weight: 170lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R
Long and lanky, with a very young face and young body composition, but the abilities he possesses now are already showing up... when taken with the context of how much physical development he has ahead of him, suffice to say, his future is VERY bright, primarly on the mound. The 85 mph OF throw he made was an indication of some good stuff to come on the mound, where he peaked at 83 mph with 2500+ spin, to go along with what can develop into a plus curveball that was 68-69 mph with 2778 avg spin and a slider that was 69-70 with 2846 avg spin. Lots of hand speed and bat speed in his round... there is some electicity in this young man.

Andre Medina

Class of 2024 / C

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: C
    Secondary Position: 3B
  • High School: Palma
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: Trosky
  • Height: 5-10
    Weight: 170lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R
A young catcher with 3rd base versatility and talent, we've seen Andre on a couple of other occasions and he continues to be incrementally stronger and better each time we see him. Has strength with the bat, getting up to 94 EV, and the bat speed is approaching 70 mph. Compact stroke and and lots of sweet spot contact. Behind the plate he showed ability to get rid of the ball quickly with a low pop of 2.05 and range up to 2.15. The footwork quickness and exchange/release both allow the arm to play up beyond his 71 mph.

Anthony Pisciotto

Class of 2023 / 1B

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2023
  • Primary Position: 1B
    Secondary Position: RHP
  • High School: Clayton Valley Charter
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: Zoots
  • Height: 6-0
    Weight: 187lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R
BAT TALENT is what stood out, to go along with a good arm at the 1B position. With a high EV of 100.7 and average of 97.6, those are numbers that should and will draw attention from colleges looking for a corner bat in the 2023 class. The hand speed is there and the bat speed is plenty above average (peak 75.8), bordering on plus. Lots of sweet spot contact as well (88%). A fastball up to 83 mph and a respectable 60 yard at 7.38, there is a lot to like now and in his future. We do see a fair amount of 100+ EVs... but not THAT many.

Adam Smaglik

Class of 2023 / RHP

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2023
  • Primary Position: RHP
  • High School: Jesuit
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: Athlete911
  • Height: 6-1
    Weight: 170lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R
At 6-foot-1 170-lbs, he looks the part for a rising senior who is still on the upward track of development. Quick arm, loose, able to generate a peak FB of 83 mph and a spin rate sniffing 2200 at its peak. Given more time and strength, there is no doubt a few more ticks on the gun that he will gain. Mid-60s CB with 2300+ spin is a good sign of the arm speed and life he's able to generate and a big decrease for the CHG spin (1579) off the fastball presents that pitch as one he can utilize down in the zone for ground ball outs.

Cam Staton

Class of 2023 / LHP

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2023
  • Primary Position: LHP
    Secondary Position: OF
  • High School: Placer
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: Chico Aces
  • Height: 6-0
    Weight: 190lbs
  • Bat/Throw: L/L
A lean and athletic body with trained strength throughout, it's clear that he has put time into his body, which translates into his good body control and ability to manipulate multiple pitches for strikes and strong complement of each other. Fastball peaked at 83 mph with run and some darting action, and feel for the strike zone .Works with a quick and confident pace. Curveball 68-70 mph with continuous rolling break deep into the zone, with feel, and then a fading change-up a lot of downward finish (big spin decrease off the FB, 1467) that should be able to be utilized for both ground balls and swing and misses.

Cameron Taylor

Class of 2023 / 3B

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2023
  • Primary Position: 3B
    Secondary Position: OF
  • High School: Napa
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: Napa Legion
  • Height: 6-2
    Weight: 190lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R
Toolsy, strong, and skilled, that is what Cam Taylor is. Ran an event low 6.76 60, showed off a big arm across diamond of 85 mph with carry and accuracy and quick release. Smooth footwork and soft hands around bag with confident actions .Tools to be a well above average and potentially plus defender at 3rd base. Offensively the tools also show up, a 97 mph max EV, bat speed in the mid-70s and good hand speed of 22.2. High rotational acceleration numbers indicate his ability to get into the zone quickly while the 63% sweet spot number shows his feel for the barrel. The tools and talent is there, the eye test might even rate higher than the numbers. Frankly, his talent would have stood out at 3B at the Northern CA ProCase.
