Northern CA Uncommitted Seniors to Know

Northern California Scouting Staff

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA - When the dust settles after the early signing period, there will be an abundance of good players who remain uncommitted and looking toward the spring season. For those who have not yet received an opportunity, keep working hard, don't concern yourself with who has committed/signed as that is out of your control. Keep working and go out and have a very good season. Go dominate your competition, make college coaches take notice. There is nothing like dominating your competition to make you stand out.

Here are 20 players to keep on the radar. Click on the names to access the full profiles and ALL the reports for each player, many of the reports are from our attendance at their high school games (yep, boots on the ground, actual scouting at actual games). Subscribers can also access any video we have for them, from games and showcases and tryouts, etc. Not wanting to be redundant in explaining why we like each of these players, these reports can be found in their profiles, along with any other reports we have filed. If any of these players in fact has committed, please let us know.

Scouting Report

4/17/19 - vs Buchanan at Fresno Easter Classic - Uncommitted; Lean long body type, is a HIT GETTER. He is calm, sees the ball real well, was on time with each swing, his 3-for-3 off 2020 SDSU-bound LHP TJ Fondtain was impressive. Stays through the ball, lets it travel and is wiling to use the middle of the field. Doesn't swing hard, takes what he's given and looked fully capable of hitting for a high average. All three knocks were to right-center. Sometimes it doesn't have to be much more complicated than, he sure looks like he can hit.

Scouting Report

10/06/19 - PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Shined as perhaps the top overall defensive player at the event. Lean strong body on 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame, both strong and athletically agile behind the plate. Outstanding receiver on both sides of the plate, good both up and down in the zone, and with fastballs and offspeed pitches. Blocks balls in dirt as well as he receives. Pop times in workout from 2.07-2.13 with 75 mph as his high velocity. His footwork and agility work very well for him as a thrower. The release can shorten a bit and a bit more arm strength are areas for improvement. He will be able to catch top collegiate pitching. Offensively posted 93 mph exit velocity and showed good catcher footspeed with 7.07 60-yard dash.  Offensively put together quality AB’s working counts deep and squaring the ball up with a long flyout to LF.

Scouting Report

9/28/19 - Fall Ball vs College of San Mateo - Johnson is another player who after multiple viewings continues to impress with his play. The smaller frame has strength and quickness showing athletic actions and some projection for the next level. During BP he was regularly working the oppo gap and middle field with line drives that translated over to games where he was right on good FB’s all day. The high hand set up has more of a rocking load allowing for quick turns producing an upward bat path; when he gets the barrel out front he can whip it to the pullside as well. In his first AB he was right on good FB’s, fouling off a couple before ultimately swinging through a CHG; long fly-out in 2nd AB to drive in a run. In the OF the athleticism was there being able to open the hips and move fluidly; can continue to remove the drift back on the ball, especially when the wind is whipping like it was during the game. I like the profile more for the middle of the field, but have seen him make plays in both RF/LF as well.

Scouting Report

10/19/19 - Scrimmage at Clayton Valley - Uncommitted; saw vs two D1 caliber pitchers, consistent with all previous viewings, middle/oppo approach that plays to extra base power, runs above average/fringe plus underway, clears front hip early and allows hands to work inside ball with ability to stay behind the ball and drive it to the oppo gap. Again don't see much if any give-in to the breaking ball and/or tendency to chase balls off the plate. Still surprising that he's uncommitted as he's got tools and usability beyond MANY others who have been offered/committed.

Scouting Report

10/13/19 - PBR N CA Top Prospect Game - Strong lean body type with sinewy proportions on 6-foot-0 175-pounds. Two-way tools from the multi-sport athlete (6.89 60-yard) showing a loose arm and athletic swing. Started the game off showing a running FB (82-86 MPH) and short tight SLD (71-70) striking out one; some minor refinements in this mechanics could have him control the plate more consistently with the live stuff. Full-body swings getting the barrel through the zone with speed showing pull gap power; good adjustment in game keeping barrel back for hard single to RF, will need to work to develop consistently better barrel control to access his ample bat speed and strength. Top outfield throw was 87 mph, though with tail at the bag, indicating the need to develop better wrist angle. The tools are still a bit raw and we should see another jump.

Max FB 86, FB 82-85, SL 70-71, CHG 81-82 - Strong, lean body type on a 6-foot-0, 175-pound frame that retains ranginess to continue to physically mature and enhance the athleticism/explosiveness. Quick arm, athletic delivery with a high knee lift. Aggressive use of the body and athleticism. Arm speed is there to someday pitch in the upper-80s. Fastball has big late run, almost a bit too much. Made an adjustment to move to the 1st base side of rubber and was able to let that run work for him. Slider has some tilt though breaks a bit early. Raw stuff is definitely intriguing. Arm is strong, arm is loose, body is live. Mechanical improvements and college level coaching very likely would unlock a pitcher of significance. For those with access to the video, it's easy to see.

Scouting Report

10/06/19 - PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Athletic, lean muscled and long frame at 6-foot-1, 160-pounds. He flashes twitch (7.01 60-yard)  and bounce both in the INF and OF. Great understanding of his zone showing patient, yet aggressive approach on his way to being on-base three times (2 1B, CF/RF; 4.60-4.72T). Swinging a wood bat in game action, one of his line drives came off the bat at 91 mph. During BP kept his hands tight working the oppo gap with easy carry from the loose hands; gets on plane and flashed some quickness in the bat. Moved from SS/CF during the games after taking SS for his workout; feet are quick taking strong angles and keeping throws firm across the diamond. Continues to show that he is on the verge of taking his tools/athleticism to the next level of his development.

Scouting Report

5/31/19 - BAWS 2019 - Long, medium frame with high waist and square shoulders; firm build with some muscular strength and athletic actions (7.05 60yd). Balanced stance with slight bend in knees; very simple stance with quick rock starting forward momentum. Swing is compact and direct having lift through contact with full body driving through the ball. Showed ability to backspin the ball into the gaps having line drives to the middle and pull side. Defense was solid during the workouts and in game as well. Quick, active feet with good first step; allows him to react well to ball and make plays moving through it. Glove stays low and open with slight push through contact; good feed to loose arm (85 MPH). Defense was good in the games as he took charge positioning himself and others for best success.

Scouting ReportS

7/07/19 - CCB World Series - Medium, strong frame compact with lean wiry build. Quick feet and aggressive athlete. High hands open stance with knee tuck; quick load showing compact upward barrel with ability to square up the baseball gap to gap. Uses athletic ability in field at both 2B and in CF where he has a quick first step and loose arm. Threw a guy out at the plate during sac fly.

2/22/19 - Game vs Monte Vista - One at-bat and finished the game playing 2nd base, took good clean INF, turns double play very adeptly, loose arm and athletic feet, the one AB was excellent, lined out to SS on 83 mph FB, stayed inside and got barrel on time, took a diving play by UOP-bound SS Gavello to rob him of the hit.

Scouting Report

10/06/19 - PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Strong compact build on medium frame moving feet well at 5-foot-10, 185-pounds; make-up speed in OF (7.15 60-yard) able to close on balls. Put together a professional BP spraying line drives all around the field with the short compact swing; gets on plane early and the hands speed to keep barrel in the zone (89 mph exit velocity off the tee). Just missed a couple hits right on pitches during the game for hard lineouts to CF and LF. Arm fits best in LF/CF (consistent 82-83 mph outfield throws) with the ability to close on the baseball and accurate throws to bags. Routinely displays not only his tools but also his ability to perform, each time we see him, both in environments like this and game action. A player that a coach can recruit and trust in what he will get when he comes to campus.

Scouting Report

2/12/19 - Uncommitted, compact and stoutly put together at 5-foot-8, 185-pounds, viewing in first game of year vs Redwood HS, good motor, energy to play showed up in warm-ups, moves well laterally at 2nd base, good reads and range with instinctive first step, turns double play well, strength around the bag, flick arm action and can make throws from different angles, plays confidently, in the box has a hitterish feel, quick trigger and short to the ball, showed ability to drive mistakes but also displayed bat control in hit-run situations (going up to FB chest-high to foul it off), when gets pitch to hit he lets swing go with aggressiveness, hands work inside the ball and gets barrel on time with body behind the ball, no hook in the stroke. Team seems to have a certain expectation when he's at the plate. Fun one to watch and he's a player.

Scouting Report

6/02/19 - BAWS 2019 - Large, physical frame with strong lower half; on the mound he attacked hitters working quickly striking out half the hitters he faced over two innings. The FB (T84) worked at it’s higher velocity more consistently in the 1st with ability to spot on both sides of the plate flashing some life up through the zone. The CB (68-70 MPH) was a true weapon being used on both sides of the plate from a tight short 11/5 break with feel. The CHG (73-74 MPH) had arm side fade with good feel also. The numbers aren’t anything that is going to jump off paper, but the consistent ability to go out and compete while producing during games did. Rodriguez could still make a jump as he firms up the frame and matures.

Scouting Report

10/06/19 - PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Strong and bursty at 5-foot-11, 165-pounds, Gazdar has firm muscular strength in his frame with the ability to turn up the speed when needing it (7.18 60-yard). Bat is violent and whippy getting through the zone as he shot linedrives all around the gaps during BP. During games showed patient approach and recognized pitches taking what was given to him and looking to execute all around the field; infield single and single to LF during the games, along with ability to shoot/drive (top exit velocity of 90 mph in 5 swings off the tee) the ball down the RF line. Clearly demonstrated he knows what to do with fastballs. An impressive offensive approach, quite advanced for a high school hitter. Footwork and glove to stick at the position bouncing around before quick arm (85 mph velocity) to the bag; defense to stay in the middle of the diamond.

Two strikeouts in his inning of work as he controlled the delivery using a long 3/4 release. Liked how he set hitters up and the ball jumped on hitters with his three strong pitches. FB 84-85 T87 moving it to both sides and having firm life in the zone. CHG 78 with bottom late on hitters. SLD 71-72 with 3/4 bend showing firm break able to manipulate and push off the plate for swing and misses. Demeanor and intensity were on display, giving off an air of confidence in both his stuff and ability to get outs. Looks to be one of the senior pitchers in the area to closely follow in the spring.

Scouting Report

6/02/19 - BAWS 2019 - Medium frame that shows muscled strength throughout the frame. After running a 6.98 60-yd, Mauterer showed off his hitting skills in BP with a quick trigger and tight turns keeping a compact barrel and showing strength on line drives into the gaps. His defense was solid working low and behind the baseball with his eyes staying behind the glove; it’s a compact arm with the ability to keep throws on the bag (81 MPH). During the games he showed the ability to find the barrel with lots of deep drives into the OF; lots of solid contact that ended up falling into gloves instead of finding holes. His defense was also solid during the games being able to make plays at 2B with decent range and the ability to make the throws needed for the position; the glove looks like it could fit at 2B/3B and possible in the OF. The strength is present on the frame with some space for the tools to continue to develop. Older brother is a OF/P at Cal-Berkeley.

Scouting Report

10/06/19 - PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Very projectable build at 6-foot-6, 190-pounds with wide shoulders and frame to add weight/strength. Hands stay wide through athletic delivery allowing full arm swing to 3/4 getting extension and having the FB dart through the zone. FB 84-86 life in the zone and spotting gloveside. CHG 76-78 with late bottom; swing and miss Change. CB 68-71 overhand 12/6 flashing bite and feel; able to throw into and out of the zone for strikes. Late life on all pitches, with hitters routinely swinging through and late to the fastball and the CB breaking deep into the zone. He looks to have the ability to put well-above-average spin on the ball. Outstanding projectability with a ceiling that has a chance to significantly high.

Scouting Report

10/09/19 - PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Long and wide frame with some lean strength at 6-foot-3, 200-pounds; projectable length able to take on some more muscle at the next level. The loose easy swing created lift through the middle of the field during BP and showed in-game HR power, hunting a first pitch FB and getting to it for a long HR over the LF wall. Possesses a hitter-ish presence at the plate. Posted a 94 mph exit velocity in 5 swings off the tee. Athleticism showed up with the body control moving around at 3rd and SS; made a nice play on a top ball just missing a runner and showed the angles to fit well at 3B in the future. Arm played well in getting rid of the ball easily and accurately while moving in time with his body. Raw arm strength (80 mph velocity) is usable with the release though it’s an area for improvement.

Scouting Report

10/06/19 - PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Long wiry frame with some present strength in the 6-foot-0, 165-pound frame; projectable lanky build. Showed a quick, loose arm from the OF attacking the ball and being able to put throws consistently on the bag, top throwing velocity of 88 mph, consistently above 85 on all four throws. LH bat shows ability to whip the barrel through the zone (89 mph exit velocity off the tee) staying flat through contact and sending LD’s to all parts of the field; doubled in game to LF on a breaking ball and singling to RCF while also stealing 2nd. PITCHING: Lean wiry athletic body with sloping shoulders on 6-foot-0 165-pound frame, competed as two way player and showed intriguing talent both ways. Fluid and athletic on the mound, works well over the rubber, allowing controlled deeper backside arm action. Stays in-line with stride leg, starts from far 1st base side of rubber. Quick arm with easy arm action, overhand slot, does tend to give a bit with plant leg which saps some power of the delivery and leads to some recoil negative energy. Bit of a sneaky release point as he keeps ball hidden pretty well. Displayed fastball control with some armside run. Late bottom out of change-up that can be swing and miss pitch. Showed feel of small late curveball thrown with feel. All three pitches and the raw stuff are on verge of developing into a college recruitable pitcher.

Scouting Report

10/06/19 - PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Physical, athletic and strong at 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, body continues to make positive improvements each time we see him. Kelly showed the versatility of his tools as he’s moved from 3B to the OF allowing his quickness (6.89 60-yard) to play up while continuing to show a bat that profiles as a middle of the order hitter. Wide stance allows the direct hands to lift through contact driving liners through the OF; when he keeps his connections the ball jumps off the bat. Flashed that strength on a shot right at the SS during the games. Moves easily in the OF having some flat length out of the glove on throws keeping it at the base and flashing firm carry, posting a high throwing velocity of 83 mph. The innate strength and some twitch indicate that a jump to an impact hitter could very well be just around the corner.

Scouting Report

5/15/19 - CCS Playoffs D1 - Uncommitted. I’d mentioned Farfan as being a guy to watch this Playoffs as he’d impressed me in multiple viewings then did it again during this game. The large, physical frame is wide in the shoulders with the frame moving athletically and quickly from limited effort exerted (4.75T, 4.77T). He went 2-4 with a 1B to CF and long HR to RCF. The bat creates easy loft, regularly on plane driving through extension. The strength showed up in his HR as the ball was on a line and continued to carry deep to RCF. Impressed in his 4th AB when he was fed nothing but curveball. He fouled off the best one to hit before working the count to 2-2. He stayed on the final CB driving it to RF. Has shown arm strength at 3rd in previous viewings and he hops around the position ready to charge in and shut down small ball. He had one ball bounce off his glove on a dive down the line showing the range he can cover and just missed getting the ball out of his glove. A 2020 that has really made a name for himself this season with his steady play and the tools that have room for continued growth.
