PODCAST: SoCal ProCase Recap

ORANGE, CA. - The 2019 MLB Draft completed on June 5th, and on June 8th, it was time to turn our attention to the 2020 class at the SoCal ProCase. A select group of players were chosen to participate in this exclusive event geared toward high level collegiate and draft prospects.

Players were put through a pro-style workout - 60 yard dash, exit velocity testing, BP, defensive workout - before participating in scout ball format game that saw eight pitchers toe the rubber. PBR California scouting staff collected various stats/data during the workout and game which can be found HERE.

In this edition of the SoCal ProCase Spotlight we highlight:

C Garrett Guillemette (Servite HS)

Catcher Garrett Guillemette of Servite High School is one of the most highly regarded uncommitted players in the state. Currently ranked No. 67 in the Class of 2020, Guillemette has made it his mission to reconstruct his body since the end of the spring season and it shows. He said he’d dropped close to 15 pounds at that time of the ProCase and after having seen him again this past week, it appears the muscle and strength is beginning to really show. Guillemette recently decommitted from Oregon after the coaching transition. Listed at 6-foot-1, 190-pounds he may be closer to 6-foot and it’s a stout 190-pounds, particularly in the lower half. Guillemette is a physical catcher who is now beginning to tap into his athleticism with his “new” body.

After making the Underclass Area Code team a year ago, Guillemette finds himself in a class that has a lot of quality depth throughout the state. In fact, catcher may be the deepest position in the state from a sheer talent standpoint. He’s a competitive catcher who leads from behind the dish. He’s verbal both ways - when things are good and bad - and his pitchers tend to respond. Guillemette's tools can’t be overlooked; he posted a 92 exit velocity; 1.93-2.04 pop times; and a 79 mph position velocity. He’s been clocked as high as 92 on the mound as well.

Was very active and engaged during the live at-bat portion of the event. He appeared to quickly develop a rapport with the pitchers he worked with. His “style” with pitchers was welcomed and fed off by the pitchers he caught.

Showed off why he is one of the better defensive catchers in the class by displaying more athleticism with the dropped weight showing improved lateral movement moving left-and-right along with more explosion out of the crouch allowing him to at times generate downhill plane on his throws. He shows soft, strong hands and wrists allowing him to stick pitches that required glove rotation. While there may be strong armed catchers, few have quicker transitions with the accuracy on the throws that Guillemette shows consistently.

Offensively he barreled balls with more consistency showing improved bat speed through the zone. He maintains his gap-to-gap approach resulting in loud contact through his two round BP session. He generates his hand speed through excellent use of the lower half that sees him drive his back hip into the ball creating good leverage and maintaining his balance. Shows a consistent path with his hands and barrel.
