PODCAST: SoCal ProCase Recap

ORANGE, CA. - The 2019 MLB Draft completed on June 5th, and on June 8th, it was time to turn our attention to the 2020 class at the SoCal ProCase. A select group of players were chosen to participate in this exclusive event geared toward high level collegiate and draft prospects.

Players were put through a pro-style workout - 60 yard dash, exit velocity testing, BP, defensive workout - before participating in scout ball format game that saw eight pitchers toe the rubber. PBR California scouting staff collected various stats/data during the workout and game which can be found HERE.

In this edition of the SoCal ProCase Spotlight we highlight:

RHP/CF Jared Jones (La Mirada HS)

2020 RHP/CF Jared Jones, a Southern Cal commit, is listed at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds showing an athletic, strong build with strength throughout the medium/large frame. Jones showed his usual twitchy athleticism that allows him to excel at the plate, the outfield, and especially on the mound. Because of his combination to go get it in the outfield and hit balls out of the yard, many believe Jones would be a high draft pick as an outfielder. However, it’s clear he’ll be drafted as a pitcher and given that opportunity first.

Jones showed off his hit tool during his two rounds of batting practice driving balls to all fields with present power and hitting two out at Hart Park. It’s an aggressive swing that utilizes Jones’s superior hand speed and present strength to create leverage with the barrel through the zone to elevate and separate through extension. Quiet, slightly bent setup with hands at the shoulders and high back elbow using his hands (rocks them into position) and a leg lift as a timing mechanism. Swing is quick and powerful with little wasted motion with excellent use of the lower half. Drove a ball in-game showing off the present bat speed/power combination.

On the mound Jones was the last pitcher of the day and did not disappoint showing his usual electric arsenal during the scout ball format game in which he faced eight batters. His first pitch was 97 mph and sat mostly 94-95 mph during his outing. His fastball velocity is well known, but it was his changeup that opened eyes 89-90 mph with filthy run and sink before diving to the arm side. He showed the ability to throw the pitch to both righties and lefties. Jones also featured a sharp, late biting, slider at 81-82 mph that absolutely buckled hitters.

Jones is a household name in baseball circles with the tools of a top draft pick at a couple positions. After another strong summer and senior year, we can expect to hear his name early in the 2020 MLB Draft.
