Ryan Ozella
NorCal Scout

Our boots-on-the ground scouting effort across the beautiful state of California allows us to see many, many players at various levels of competitive events. As a result of multiple viewings over a spring/summer season, it's easy to see the ones who separate themselves from the pack. Such is the case with recent Cal-Berkeley commit, Vaughn Mauterer who is showing his wares very well both behind the plate and on the mound.

As we head into the fall/winter season we will be highlighting "Top Performer Spotlights" on players who really stood out at past events and seasons. In this edition we'll take a look at 2019 C/RHP Vaughn Mauterer of Marin Catholic HS.

NOTE: Be sure to click on Vaughn's profile to see recent video we have of him.

QUICK TAKE

I saw Vaughn, a recent Cal-Berkeley commit, multiple times this summer where he showed high-quality production from behind the plate and stuff on the mound. A long and lean build on the 6'0" frame allows the catcher to use his athleticism (4.53 H-1st, 7.09 60-yd) to make plays behind the plate and on the field. An above average arm (up to 87 on the mound) helps to keep runners from advancing and Mauterer has a strong ability to keep the ball on the bag with very quick transitions (1.90, 1.94 Pop). The bat shows sneaky pop from the right side with current gap power while utilizing an early loaded-front leg lift, while keeping balanced when driving through the ball on contact. Excited to see him play more this Spring.

SCOUTING REPORT

7/14-7/15/18: Medium Frame with long/lean build; wide shoulders and athletically muscular. Very projectable, showing off great measurables matched with in-game performance. Balanced swing with even hands and a tight compact barrel after a front leg lift; multiple rounds of quality BP. Mauterer showed off pull pop (90mph exit velo) and barrel control in games crushing a HR to LF and driving a ball into the oppo gap for a triple. Defensively flashed an above average arm; quick release (1.90-1.94 Pop) with ability to gain ground quickly while keeping ball on the base. Showed quick body with blocking skills and the ability to smother pitches while keeping ball in front. Smooth actions as a runner with quality stride length and ability to move around the bases (4.72T on 3B, 7.09 60-yd dash. On the mound, utilized a stretch only delivery keeping the hands at the waist with slight lift to create momentum; quick leg lift before driving down the hill and allowing his long arm action to very quickly get to a 3/4 release point. FB up to 87, sitting 83-85 with life through the zone. CHG 76-77 turning over for late, small sink to the arm side. SLD 73-75 showing sharp lateral movement with tight spin; really worked well off-plate for punch outs. Outing had control issues, but the stuff was always present.

6/1/18-6/3/18 @ BAWS 2018 - Lean wiry athlete with good proportions on 5-foot-11 170-pound body. One of Northern California's top 2019 combo prospects as a catcher/pitcher. Wide stance with hands high in the middle of the chest. Early load leads to balance in swing and showed ability to drive ball into outfield regularly. Above average arm; excellent footwork behind plate with ability to get runners even on tough pitches (1.91-2.04 Pop). Multiple caught stealing in games showing quickness in feet and ability to put ball on bag. Athletic runner not normal for catcher and showed good stride length; 4.53 H-1st. On mound works stretch only. Hands stay at waist throughout. Showed loose arm with longer circle in back before mid-3/4 release. Fastball 84-88 mph early and 81-84 mph from Stretch/2nd inning. Pitch was straight with occasional late sink at plate. Bouts of control loss throughout innings, but showed ability to put past hitters down in zone. Change-up 77-80 mph with dive off the fastball plane; times where pitch will run arm side off the plate. Curveball 70-72 mph with small downer spin in 12/6 action; located pitch and could get swing and miss. Strong overall performance for weekend.
